Heads up on this Fare discussion.

2026 Fare Policy Update

In partnership with Biddeford Saco Old Orchard Beach Transit (BSOOB), Greater Portland Metro is engaging in a fare policy review in Winter/Spring 2026. This process is likely to result in changes to fares, and fare policies, for BSOOB and Metro on or shortly after July 1, 2026.

Meeting dates include:
Thursday, April 9: 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm; Portland Public Library, 5 Monument Sq., Rines Auditorium
Saturday, April 11: 11:00 am – 1:00 pm; Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St., Elm Room
Tuesday, April 14: 6:00-7:00 pm; Virtual Meeting

Yes, thank you for the reminders, folks.

I have a conflicting meeting but will try to get to the Library for the very beginning or very end of the meeting on Thursday. 

For some contest: Maine froze the gasoline tax under Paul LePage in 2011. Now we issue public bonds to cover our massive and growing roads funding gap every budget cycle, which we all are on the hook to repay regardless of how much we do/don't drive. Even if we rose the gas tax to index to inflation, it covers only a fraction of the actual costs of driving private vehicles. Also, Maine provides one of the smallest amounts of state funding per capita to transit (and much of what we do spend is on the state ferry service, which is not the same as with bus services like Metro).

Don't let anyone tell you that the bus system is "too subsidized" or "loses too much money".
