All,

As mentioned in the prior email thread, a pdedestrian was fatally struck at the intersection of Marginal & Preble earlier today.

To address this swiftly, we must have an emergency meeting to discuss and analyze what changes we can make to the intersection. Please respond with your availability.  I will also be forwarding this to Jeremiah and see if he or other city staff have openings.

Please also reach out to your councilors, and get their attention on this matter, too.

This week, I am free from 5pm onward from Thursday through Sunday.

How about 5:30 today for a discussion of pedestrian deaths?

That works for me. I'll need to head out at about 645 for the UCP's general meeting tonight, however.

I'll ask Todd. We hold our regular meetings at PMC @ 7 anyway

Unfortunately, it does not seem we are able to get ahold of PMC at this time.

Jacob, thanks for calling for this!

I have to coach little league finals tonight, so I can’t be there.

Do we have any more details than what was published in the city’s website?

The only additional bit of information I have, from a source at the hospital, is that the gentleman who was killed was using a walker.

Marginal way and Preble Street are both far too wide for the amount of traffic, Especially given that intersections frequent used by pedestrians cyclist, and anyone using the park.

Myles,

No more information that what we currently have at the moment. Jeremiah responded to my invite to the meeting just a moment ago, stating :

Hi Jacob,

Thanks for checking in.

From a design perspective, everything that happened at this location is speculative until the Police Department completes its investigation.  Therefore, I need to check in with my Director on next steps once that information is available.  If you have other information that we do not, please share it at your earliest convenience.

Thanks,
Jeremiah

I can't make it tonight, but this would be a great opportunity to hold the District Attorney to her campaign promise to keep us safe from dangerous drivers.

Regardless of whether the driver intended it or not, this was a homicide, even if the cops don't want to call it that. Is the driver still at large and a potential threat to the public's safety?

Has the perpetrator been prevented from owning or operating a motor vehicle?

According to MaineDOT's crash database, there have been 9 other injury-causing crashes at Preble/Marginal since 2020 – two of which injured a person on a bike. As Myles notes, the intersection was originally built for 5-lane roadways to feed into it, but now, most of Preble Street and Marginal are only 2-3 lanes wide, so the crosswalk crossings are unnecessarily long and vulnerable to crashes.

Given the firsthand evidence we have of chronic speeding at this street, what steps can the city take immediately to make it safer?

Since google calendar apparently decided to email literally everyone in PBPAC, I've pulled back that mass invite and just providing a link to a calendar event for individuals to add themselves https://calendar.google.com/calendar/event?action=TEMPLATE&tmeid=MmpoZ2c2azV2ZnY2c3BsY2hiamNqcTRkbjIgamxhdmFybndheUB1cmJhbmlzdHBvcnRsYW5kLm1l&tmsrc=jlavarnway%40urbanistportland.me

Here's just the meeting link, I had it elsewhere somehow.

The calendar link didn't work for me, but this link does: https://meet.google.com/fun-esuz-egy?hs=224
