Hi Folks,
As required by our bylaws the election to elect our officers for a yearlong term will take place at our regular meeting in September.
We may or may not be considering bylaw amendments as well, if folks want to bring those forward in time to be enacted moments before we hold our September election, they should be ready by our August general meeting, which is on the 18th to avoid the council meeting on the 11th.

Up for election will be the positions of Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary, the executive committee also includes the past chair as a voting member.

As stated in the bylaws, nominations and seconds can be made at either the August meeting (August 12th) or at the September meeting (September 9th), but voting will only take place at the September meeting.

It is acceptable to nominate yourself, though a second is still needed from another voting member of the committee: a voting member is anyone who both lives in Portland and has attended at least one PBPAC meeting in the last 12 months, after attending within 4 months of each other before that.  If you're unsure if you're a voting member, John Clark has a list, but you probably are.

Under current bylaws:

  • Vice Chair is a great position for newer members, as it's a great way to get up to speed, and there are no official duties, except serving as acting chair if the Chair is unavailable. Someone serving as vice chair might serve as chair the following year, but the position of chair is open to other contestants at our September Elections.
  • The chair's duties are to create the agenda, run meetings and serve as the signatory on some letters, the secretary can also serve that function.
  • The Secretary's primary duty is to take notes at official meetings, keep our archives and website organized, and sometimes serve as signatory on official letters.
  • The Past Chair serves as a member of the executive committee, assists in preserving and passing on institutional knowledge, and can serve as acting chair if neither the Chair nor Vice Chair is available.

There is a tradition of having sort of quarterly meetings with the executive team to talk about the sharing of the burden of running the committee and make other plans; the timing of those meetings is up to the committee.

Thanks for reading, and feel free to reach out with any questions about any of the executive roles.
