Hi folks,
More than a year after
our report on York Street, the city is having a 30% design review public meeting, on July 15th at 5PM.
Portland City Hall Room 24, 389 Congress Street, Portland Maine 04101
York Street between State and High is one of, or possibly the most dangerous 2 blocks to be a cyclist in the city of Portland, and serves as a critical part of the only real option for cycling from Downtown Portland to South Portland.
This will be the most critical moment to be present, and the best chance we'll have of pushing for improvements which are possible. Once they get beyond this 30% phase, it's hard to make any changes.
The diagram from the official page above doesn't answer a lot of questions, which the presentation may answer, but, it doesn't look like they are considering protected lanes and it does not look like what they are doing will make Park and York safe for cyclists, so it will be important to show up.
Our report does a good job of laying out what we & the Greenway will be pushing for:
- safety
at Park & York (currently the most dangerous intersection in
Portland that I'm aware of in terms of consistent bicycle/car crashes
re: dot map tool),
- Safety at York/State Street (not as
dangerous, but 3 recorded crashes and significant risk to cyclists from
traffic continuing onto York)
- protected infrastructure for
Bicycles entering and exiting the bridge via York Street, and a
reduction to 2 travel lanes for York Street: I was very concerned to see
an early rendering of York Street in the State and High presentations
retained 3 travel lanes, making protected bike lanes probable impossible
and eliminating one reason to support the 2 way conversion of State and
High.
- Traffic entering this network from the Casco Bay
Bridge should be subdued and reminded, through clear design choices,
that they are entering a dense neighborhood where the right of way is a
shared space for a variety of users.
Hope to see some of you there!
