In the spirit of the discussion of the evening, in my travels lately I have encountered am interesting bike lane set up in Scarborough.

I am curious as to folks thoughts on it. It is on half of Eastern Road which is basically straight line road one block south of Route 1. The only vehicle traffic is to serve the housing developments off of it.

Not sure if the picture shows proper perspective, but the road in total is just wide enough for two cars. To pass by you have to go into the bike lane.

The other half of Eastern Road is getting torn up for gas line install and (I presume) could get the same treatment after. There is a huge development going in next to this second section.

That's really bad design/planning if cars have to go into the bike lane to travel in opposite directions.

This is an "Advisory Bike Lane". Last year the Bicycle Coalition helped Yarmouth and Scarborough with the temporary installation of these, ("Imagine People Here" project), which were the first ever instances of this treatment in Maine.

I believe Scarborough made theirs permanent.  Not sure on Yarmouth.  We also helped Gray with one this year.

^ Thanks for mentioning this, Steve. I was skeptical of this at first but I find that it works really well. Cars almost always observe the dashed white lines and drive in the middle of the road except to pull over to let others by, exactly as intended.

That's a small but significant shift in how bikes and cars typically interact – now drivers are pulling over/changing lanes for other drivers, not for bikes.

But the real advantage of the layout is how it visually narrows the roadway for drivers, which seems to make everyone go slower. I wonder if BCM collected any speed data before/after the project to confirm that?

I rode on Eastern Road just last night. All users, cyclists, walkers, baby carriage users, motor vehicles and yes turkeys too, all shared the space nicely.

BTW, this is a FHWA approved “experimental treatment”.
