Hi, Jo here- long time email chain lurker.
I was wondering if there’s any data collected on how many people use the bus when it’s free vs regular days. I usually commute on bike but I always take the bus when it’s free.
Thanks,
Jo Ophardt

I'd be curious to see if it makes a difference on ridership. Personally, I don't go out of my way to ride on fare-free days (usually because I forget when they are), but it was a nice surprise yesterday since I needed to take the bus somewhere anyways. The 9B I was on yesterday seemed quite busy, but I'm not sure how much of that can be attributed to the lack of fare.

I will say that the period a few years back where they made the fare $1, I used the bus much more and was able to encourage a lot more folks to do so as well.

I didn't realize that there were other fare free days other than election day, and I'm not too sure if METRO publicizes them that much.

Also, I'm pretty sure that we owe the fare free election to my partner Caroline who several years ago called up METRO and  requested it to whoever answered who said "That's a good idea, I'll send it up the food chain," and BOOM it happened. Just goes to show that sometimes things can move quickly without feasibility studies, consultants, traffic models, etc.

I did not know it was a free fare day yesterday.  Was it because of Election Day?

I followed a bus down Washington Avenue and noticed it said Free on the rear sign.  Thought it might be because of the gas work on the bridge (and they had not changed the sign back).

PS: It was a rare day that I had a car to drive.

Yes, Steven, yesterday was free on Metro, due to Election Day.
Of course, I partook of it.
They do this regularly on voting days, in Spring and Fall. (Tho I think they could do better announcing it.)
