Related question: does anyone know who’s responsible for cleaning up the debris from an auto accident? Whenever they occur on Deering Ave, it seems that a lot of the larger chunks get taken away. But the smaller bits of glass and sharp plastic and metal just kind of get pushed into the bike lane or onto the sidewalk, never to be attended to. Probably they eventually end up going down the drains or getting swept up by the street cleaners who come one or two times a year.  Pretty dangerous for pedestrians, bikers, wheelchair users, etc.

And flex posts are only seasonal since they are removed for snow plows. I’d prefer a permanent solution!

I took some photos of this as well. Again, the bus stop was directly in the line of fire and a part from one of the cars ended up right there on the sidewalk where the kids stand. There was talk from city officials about installing flex posts there and possibly narrowing that section of the street but we haven't seen any action on that yet.
I was thinking about something Annie mentioned a while ago: she worked with the city and USM to get a raised crosswalk installed.  Correct me if I'm wrong Annie, but I think you said that USM's involvement was integral because they ended helping so much with the funding. The general message from the city seems to be there's just not enough funding. But I was thinking maybe we could try to involve Portland Community Squash and Levy Day School, both of whom are no strangers to fundraising. Both are also planning significant projects/additions so now might be the time to try to involve them more.

Thank you Scott! I was JUST thinking the same as I drove home about 10 minutes ago. And once again this accident could have been tragic just hours earlier when the kids were at the bus stop.

Ugh. Thank you Scott and absolutely. I hope they are okay

Regina Philips is our D3 councilor and I’m happy to help work to engage her with this issue.

Do you know what time this happened?

Thanks for sharing .

Hi Neighbors,

Unfortunately, once again, this morning there was another significant accident at the intersection of Deering & Noyes. It appeared that one person left the scene in an ambulance and one car was totaled. Photo below.

I wonder if the timing is right to raise this again with the city. Is there a city counselor that we could get involved (or more involved)?

I'm right back into a slightly mad week at work, but, sat down to at least start a draft tonight- feel free to add things if you want, or, deal with your own weeks & join in later on. I have Monday, Tuesday & Wedensday off this week, so by that point I'll have time to dig in.

I tend to report these issues to See click fix under  “street sweeping”. I hope that works!

Hi all --

Reminder that tonight is a planning board meeting on the project at Portland Community Squash.  I am hoping to testify to voice concerns about the city's inaction on traffic mitigation at the Deering/Noyes intersection ahead of this project (which we are generally otherwise excited about).

Details here -- it should be joinable via zoom: https://portlandme.portal.civicclerk.com/event/6399/overview
