The penultimate time I was in the local state store I realized that a
few of the less-represented countries had disappeared: Spain, South
Africa and the Latin American selections. Sure enough, I stopped by
this evening and found that they had all been moved to another corner
(including my perennial South African favorite Goats Do Roam), and
there in the middle of everything I found a bottle of Wrongo Dongo.

Yep, Wrongo Dongo, the well-known Jumilla.

Jumilla. The region in Spain. A lot of the wines there are made with
the well-known Monastrell grape.

You know, Monastrell. A Spanish grape, previously thought to be the
same as the French Mourvèdre but now of somewhat more ambiguous
origin. It's used inside Spain quite a bit, but like Tempranillo was
not seen much outside of there until recently. Want to while away an
entertaining evening on Google? Try and find out more information,
accurate and useful information, than this - I just did.

And the name Wrongo Dongo? It's a mystery, too. The vintner's site
doesn't mention it at all, although it lists a few different
Monastrells. But you know what, it just doesn't matter. What we have
here is a good bottle of what I'd call high-class plonk. Nothing
you'll take to your dinner with Wolfgang Puck, but an enjoyable fruit-
filled red that pairs very well with food (we had pork tenderloin).
It's definitely young, with some acidity and definite spice. This is
the kind of wine I remember buying for a couple of bucks while
studying in Spain - an earthy, simple wine made to be enjoyed.

Find it at the LCB site (no, really!) at

state.
