Baque to Basics An Introduction to Maracatu Nação/Baque Virado
Part of the Juba do Leão 2016 workshop series
Tutor - Holly Prest Sun 23rd Oct | 11am – 5pm | £35 | OldhamThis introductory Maracatu workshop packs percussion punch, with the option to enjoy alfaia, caixa, gonguê, abê/shekere, and mineiro/ganzá. Maracatu dates back to the pre-1800s, where the enslaved in Brazil would honour and celebrate the traditions and rituals of their African homelands as their culture mingled with European influences and the native Indian roots of what became Brazil. Get the Maracatu ‘hit’ whilst taking away new musical information, see how the style has survived and progressed over time, and enjoy the opportunity to play authentic instruments (with enough alfaias for every player to harness the power of the bass drum simultaneously!).

Ijexa A day of Afro-Brazilian rhythms and songs.
Tutor - Jon Hardeman Sat 29th Oct | 10:30am - 5:00pm | £18 - £25 | B'hamIjexa, pronounced ‘ee jay shah’, is one of the forms of African/Brazilian religious expression found primarily in the North-East of Brazil, in and around the city of Salvador da Bahia. Its music, one of the principal roots of all of Brazil’s folkloric and carnival music forms, is earthy, funky and celebratory.
This is a day workshop for percussionists and singers of all levels, all those who want to properly learn something of this rhythm and it's beautiful call and answer songs. For those already involved with groups playing any kind of Afro-Brazilian music, this is an opportunity to get into and deepen your understanding of a music often misunderstood and more often than not misrepresented in samba bands etc.
