Torah Thoughts from Rabbi Doug…
Parshat Pinchas
This Shabbat we read the portion of Pinchas. Amongst the subjects that are discussed in the portion is the apportioning of the Land of Israel to the twelve tribes. The Torah (Bamidbar 26:53-56) describes what seem to be two very different divisions of the Land. At first the Torah says that the Land should be divided demographically, with the larger tribe receiving the larger portion of land. Thereafter, the Torah says that the Land must be divided by lottery. Further, the Torah states that it is divided by the word of Hashem. Rashi, based on the Talmud, explains that Israel was divided into twelve portions. The twelve portions were written on wooden lots and mixed in a container. The names of the tribes were written on other wooden lots and mixed in another container. Elazar the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) wore the Urim and Tumim (the special garment which aided in prophecy) and announced that if a particular tribe would be picked, this would be the portion of the tribe. The leader of that tribe would then pick the lots, and by divine miracle his tribe and portion would come up. By a further miracle, the wooden lots themselves would announce the tribe and portion. Thus the division of the land was by size, lottery and prophecy. The division of the land has an important teaching both in our attitude toward life and in our service of Hashem.
Each tribe received the portion that suited them logically. Underlying this was the prophecy that this was to be their portion and the lottery. We all have a portion in life. We understand how we got there and sometimes question the justice of our portion. In truth, every person was given his portion in the world by Hashem in order to perfect the part of the world that his soul was uniquely created to perfect.
Each of us was endowed with unique abilities to deal with our portion.
When we focus in this manner our lives gain new meaning and we attain immeasurable success.

Numbers 25:10 Pg. 686 in the Hertz Chumash

1st Aliya: As a reward for his act of zealousness, Pinchas is appointed as a Kohain. Although a grandson to Aharon, he was not included in the original selection of Kohanim. No other person would ever be so honored. Pg. 686 Ch.25:10

2nd Aliya: Moshe is told to do battle against the Midianites in retaliation for the incident at Baal Peor. Moshe counts the Bnai Yisroel in preparation for entering Eretz Yisroel. The total number of men over 20 years old, not including the Leviyim, is 601,730; compared to 40 years earlier when it was 603,550. If you include all men, women and children,
the total is approx. three million. Pg. 687 Ch. 26:5

3rd Aliya: Moshe divides Israel through a lottery that miraculously matched eachtribe to its proper portion. The Leviyim are counted. Pg. 690 Ch.26:52

4th Aliya: Motivated by the "shayla - question" of Tzelafchad's daughters regarding their father who died without any sons, the laws of inheritance are discussed. Moshe is told to prepare for his death, and Yehoshua is chosen as his successor. Pg. 692 Ch.27:6

5th Aliya: The remainder of the Parsha details the various public sacrifices offered throughout the year: In this aliya we speak of the Daily offerings and
the Rosh Chodesh offerings. Pg. 694 Ch.28:1

6th Aliya: The offerings of Pesach, Shavuos, Rosh Hashana, and Yom Kippur

Haftorah Pinchas Jeremiah 1:1 - 2:3 Page 710 in the Hertz Chumash

Tlas Diparanuta is the name given to the next three Haftoros. These are special selections from the Navi Yirmiyahu that were chosen because they prophesies the destruction of Yerushalayim and the 1st Beit Hamikdash. In this Haftorah, Yirmiyahu HaNavi foretells of the Babylonianinvasion. The condemnation of the Jews for abandoning G-d and Torah is somewhat softened by the concluding description of Hashem's love for His children. "I remember the devotedness of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown." as if we are given permission to envision the tears of the Creator as He confronts His beloved's infidelity.
