torah Thoughts from Rabbi Doug…
Parshat Behar-Bechukotai
I am the L-rd your G-d,
who brought you out of
the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan,
to be your G-d. Leviticus 25:38
In his commentary on our verse, Rashi quotes our Sages’ statement [Babylonian
Talmud Ketubot 110b]: “One who dwells in the Land of Israel is
considered as having a G-d, while one who dwells outside the Land is as if he
has no God.” We might expect that the order of events in the verse would be:
brought you out of Egypt, to be your G-d, to give you the land, which follows
the actual chronology of events: exodus, the revelation at Mount Sinai and
entrance into the Land. The order presented by the verse reflects the concept
that Israel’s entry into its Land is a necessary step in order for Hashem to be
Israel’s G-d. Indeed, the Sages’ comment is based upon our verse and is derived from the order of
the verse.

Summary of
Behar/Bechukotai By,
Rabbi Doug Zelden
Leviticus 25:1
Page 531 in the Hertz Chumash
1st Aliya: Parshas BeHar begins with the laws
of Shemitah and Yovel. The land lay fallow every 7th year, and after the 49th
year, (7x7) it lay fallow a 2nd year for the 50th as well. Page 531
Leviticus 25:1
2nd Aliya: Hashem (G-d) promises (25:21-22)
that He will provide for the nation, regardless of the land being fallow. No
one will go hungry. The return, at Yovel, of all hereditary lands to their
original owners is commanded. Pg.534 v.19
3rd Aliya: The difference between the sale
of a property in a walled city vs. an unwalled city is established. Continuing
the theme of providing and dependency, we are commanded to provide for our
impoverished brethren. Just as Hashem provides for us, we must provide for each
other. Pg.535 v.29
4th Aliya: The freeing of all Jewish slaves
at the Yovel is detailed. The Torah discusses redeeming a Jewish slave from a
non-Jewish owner, and the formula for how much to pay the non-Jewish master. We
begin reading Bechukotai. The opening verses describe the wondrous successes
awaiting the nation, so long as they follow Hashem's Mitzvos. The 4th Aliya
always connects the two portions. Pg.536 v.39
(and after pg.539 the reading continues on pg.542.)
5th Aliya: This Aliya is called the
Tochecha - The Rebuke. It is a lengthy
description of the terrible punishments awaiting the nation, if they do not
follow the Torah. It is customary for the Baal Koreh to have this Aliya,
not being called up by name, and to read the Tochecha faster and more
quietly than the rest of the Parsha. Pg.543 Ch.26:10
6th Aliya: The established prices for
endowments of individual worth, or that of an animal, are listed in this
Aliya. Pg.547 Ch.27:1
7th Aliya: The final portion deals with
endowments of property to the Mishkan or to the Bais Hamikdash. We stand for
the final verse as we end Sefer Vayikra. Pg.548 v.16
Maftir Aliya: We repeat the last 3 verses. Pg.550 v.32
Haftorah
Behar/Bechukotai - Jeremiah Ch. 16/17 Page 551 in
the Hertz Chumash.
Yirmiyahu's words ring with the same urgency and fear as the Tochacha itself.
Yirmiyahu was the Navi who beseeched his people to repent before the impending
destruction and exile of the nation. He decried the delusions of those who used
their ill begotten wealth to serve idols and foreign ideologies. They denied
the benevolence of G-d and were destined to go into exile. The acquisition of
wealth through illegal means is a denial of G-d's ability to provide and
protect. He who trusts in man for his strength and future is destined to be
betrayed. He will be as a lone tree in the wilderness (17:6) bereft of
protection or support. On the other hand, he who trusts in G-d will be blessed
and secured. Reemphasizing the message of Sefer Vayikra, Yirmiyahu exhorts the
nation to beg G-d for salvation and healing, and to trust His constant love and
caring.
