torah Thoughts from Rabbi Doug…
Parshat Tazria-Metzora
In Parshat Shmini last week the Torah discussed what we ordinarily refer to as "kosher" and "non‑kosher" animals, birds and insects ‑ many of these, the Torah describes as pure and impure. This week, the Torah goes on to describe states of impurity that befall people. Rashi, quotes a Talmudic sage (Rav Simlai) who says that this fits very well ‑ after all, the Creation of man also followed the Creation of the animals! The Medrash says something which might appear self‑contradictory:
"if a person merits it, they say to him, 'you preceded all the works of Creation;' but if not, they say to him, 'the mosquito came before you!'" In Jewish thought, there is no contradiction: we are given the tools to analyze both sides of this coin. It is true that in the physical order of Creation, humans come last. But why do they come last? Because everything was building up to the final purpose of Creation. Jewish sources make it clear that the world, indeed the universe, was created for human beings, who alone are able to choose good and avoid evil. The universe was created in order that we be given this opportunity to come closer to G‑d of our own volition. So indeed, we have complete freedom to choose whatever we would like to be. Anything we want! But who would want to be an animal, when he or she can be G-dly like Hashem?

of cedar, some crimson wool, a hyssop branch, fresh spring water, a clay bowl, a Kohain, the Mikveh,
seven days, a haircut and a Korban with its Mincha offering are detailed.
The  fourth Aliya always connects the double parsha.
Pg. 465 at the bottom of the page, v.55
(after page 466 the reading continues on page 470.)

5th Aliya: The Korban of a Mitzorah who is poor is discussed. Pg. 472 ch.14 v.21

Summary of Haftorah of Rosh Chodesh – Isaiah/Yishayah Chap. 66 - pg. 477
The Haftorah reflects the fact that today is also Rosh Chodesh Iyar.  Yishayah describes the ultimate downfall of all our enemies during the war of Gog and Magog. The Navi explains that this world is the manifestation of g-d's presence and glory. Yet, we are incapable and sometimes unwilling to properly recognize G-d's manifest presence. Even when the Bais Hamikdash stood the Bnai Yisroel did not appreciate their opportunity to be close to G-d and serve Him. The Navi forewarns that insincere expressions of devotion are tantamount to offering blemished sacrifices and G-d will punish those who lack sincerity and devotion. Nevertheless, the institution of the Bais Hamikdash and prayer are our only means for communication love and devotion. Therefore, those who truly mourn for the absence of the Bais Hamikdash and the Temple services will also merit to rejoice in her redemption and reconstruction. When the Bais Hamikdash will be rebuilt the nation will again be able to witness the Rosh Chodesh offering and service, and fully participate in expressing their commitment.
