have customer running green screen apps on USB/QM/WINDOWS

His error:

DH_READ_GROUP:
read error 2 on e:\remote.buyback\bb subfile 1, group 1 00000508:
error 8005 (o/s 2) reading record @ line 82 of MDBX301.MODF

i understand that somehow the data portion of BB has become corrupted.
here's what i did:

explore to the directory
right click and cut --> paste to desktop
at tcl:
ED MD BB
0001: F
0002: BB
0003: BB.DIC

i have my customer remove BB from line 2
at tcl:

CREATE.FILE DATA BB,BB

and QM created the data portion.

at this point (no support available from Sam, Doug, or Martin) - I did
talk with Sam - he couldn't tell me what to do. Martin is probably
asleep. Doug is unavailable.
so,,,,

being new to QM, i haven't experienced this scenario. in the mvBASE
world, we'd be looking at a infamous GFE (Group Format Error). we
could possibly repair the group, but ALWAYS lost data.
2 things:
1) what could have possibly caused this? (besides the obvious -
working on Windows and USB)
2) what would be the suggested method for recovery? (do i expect to
lose data?)

as always - THANKS!

Error 2 is "file does not exist". This seems to tie in with them doing
a cut
and paste to move it in Windows Explorer. he usual fix for this sort
of
thing is to cut the user's hands off so that he cannot do it again.

If, as it sounds, the user has simply moved the file, it should be
possible
just to fix the VOC entry or move the file back again. If it is more
complex
than that, please let me have some details of what they did.

Hi Steve,

> you didn't read the topic correctly.

Ah! My apologies.

In that case, back to the start....

Error 2 is coming from the o/s and says that the file does not exist.
This is odd given that we must have opened it already. My only thought
is that the USB stick was unplugged. I just tried this and got a very
strange (and different) effect where the program failed with error 19
(invalid argument) but the Windows explorer suddenly reinvented a
network disk that I had not been connected to for several days.

This does tend to suggest that Windows may be a bit unreliable if a
USB stick is unplugged while it is in use.

Any chance that this is what happened? If not, please ask the user
exactly what they did that led up to this problem.

Steve,

For what it's worth, I've had exactly the same thing happen running
OpenInsight off a USB stick. Obviously a different error number, but
otherwise the same symptoms as you describe.

Eventually we tracked it down to buggy USB firmware on the laptop.
It would momentarily lose connection, and that was enough to totally
confuse Windows. A BIOS upgrade actually fixed it.

thanks Ashley - i would lean more in that direction for a reason.
i'll check into it asap.
course, i still need to know how to instruct the user the best way for recovery.
i'm sure it doesn't matter if this happens on a hard drive or a removable drive.

what do we do ??

don't know if this created the problem, but last evening (not today - before the read error), he was updating a database that didn't include this BB file.
he said about 1/3 of the way thru, Windows rebooted itself. i kind of doubt this is the complete story, but that's what was told to me. now BB was open as far as the named common block, even though the database update had nothing to do with BB.
after speaking with me, he just re-ran the database update and supposedly all was fine.
he started using the apps in the a.m. and eventually came to me with this error.

my main question is how to recover from these types of events.

Hi Steve,

You posted the original error message but no details of what happens
if he now tries to access the file again. I had not understood that
the file remains unusable.

If he tries something such as
LIST BB
what happens? What error message is appearing to say that there is a
continuing problem?

We would very much like to see this file. Are you able to get a copy?

Even if it is not practical to send us a copy, please run a qmfix
report on the file. From the operating system level, do
qmfix pathname
(using the full pathname for qmfix if it is not in your PATH
settings). Capture the results and email these to sup...@openqm.com.

so, i guess qmfix doesn't work when you're using a USB stick ??

Hi all,

I replied directly to Steve but there are a couple of points worth recording publicly.

1. The problem appears to be that a write never made it to the USB device. This sounds like it was unplugged or went offline for some other reason while in use .

2. qmfix was not modified to handle the special case of running a USB based system. This will be fixed as soon as possible.
