Hi all,

This list does seem to be receiving rather more spam emails than it
used to. Although only group members can post items, anyone can join
the group. I am considering making membership by registration only.
This is intended only to stop spam, not to restrict free discussion
about QM.

Does anyone have any strong feelings one way or the other?

Martin,

I don't have any issues with having a registration only group based on the types of communications that I see here.  It would be more work for you.  At this point to me the SPAM is not a burden and so I am OK leaving it open.  Just ban the SPAMmer after the first time.

Martin:
my opinion is much like Dick's.
i can easily delete the occassional spam as well.
i also have no problem with 'monitored' registration.
i think most of us want your time spent on QM.
thanks for everything (you and your group)!

Not a problem for me. Other Google Groups I frequent require approved
registration.

I think you can include some type of "Welcome" page to explain the
reasons for your decision as well.

Martin,

I own the jBASE and DesignBais Google forums and I have instituted a
moderated registration. I will also refuse registration if the user
doesn't include a reason for joining the group during registration. I
do this to ensure no spammers slip past. On the DB forum, I even
moderate the first posting to make sure that the registration is
valid. If all is OK after the first post, I remove moderation for the
user.

I know all of this sounds nasty and increases my work load, but the
users of each forum have rights also and I feel its my responsibility
as the owner of the group to protect them.

Martin,
If is too much work don't bother. Sometimes the subject lines hints of
the message being QM or MV related. When you read the message, it is
obious that it is not. It doesn't take alot of time to ignore.

Question: Wouln't you want to see who is on the group? This could be a
marketing tool for you.

thanks,
Peter g.

I have no problem with signups having to be approved/registered. Do it.

I don't have a problem either way. Like others have said, it is easy
to avoid the spam, but it also isn't a problem to have to register.

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback on this.

The group will be set to require approved registration from today. This will
not affect existing users.

As the group owners, we can already see who is subscribed to it.
