TL;DR: Open City has launched a new app called CAPSure to help Chicagoans find their next local community policing meeting.

Chiagoans - are you concerned about crime in your neighborhood? Do you want to know what your local police officers have been up to?

Well, there’s a program that will help you with that, but chances are you haven’t heard of it. They’re called CAPS (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy) meetings, and they’ve been going on for close to two decades.

We think more people should know about their local CAPS meetings, and this weekend at the Safe Communities Google Hackathon, a team of us at Open City launched our latest app to help solve that problem: CAPSure.

CAPSure is a simple website that helps you find out when and where your next CAPS meeting is. Simply enter your address to find your next meeting and save it away in your calendar. It also provides driving/walking/transit directions, event contact info, and a place to leave public comments.

The data comes from the Chicago Police Department ClearPath API, launched in May 2013. And, like all Open City apps, the code for CAPSure is open source and free for anyone to take and reuse.

If you notice any bugs, report it on our issue tracker. Questions? Shoot us an email at in...@opencityapps.org.

Now everyone - find your next CAPS meeting. Then, go to it!

Thanks, Derek + Open City! This is great.
I was really surprised at how many meetings there were and how many *types*.

Court Advocacy:

Seniors:

Peer Jury:

District Advisory:

&etc

I couldn't find any info on the CPD website or the API docs defining these meeting types. I'd love to be able to drill down on this and help filter the right people to the right meetings.

Anyway, this is a great new tool for a program that was super-innovative when it was first introduced in 1993:

Way to go to OC, CPD, and DoIT!

Thanks for pointing this out Dan. I've opened an issue for classifying these events. We should definitely distinguish between types.

If anyone wants to help, I'll be working on this at the Hack Night tonight!
