Hit Man is a 2023 American romantic comedy film produced and directed by Richard Linklater, who co-wrote the screenplay with Glen Powell. The film stars Powell, Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio, Retta, and Sanjay Rao. It follows an undercover New Orleans police contractor who poses as a reliable hitman as he tries to save a woman in need. The basic premise was based on the true story of a college professor who worked for the Houston police in the late 1980s and 1990s as a fake hitman, as described in a 2001 magazine article by Skip Hollandsworth.
Gary Johnson is a mild-mannered professor of psychology and philosophy at the University of New Orleans who also works undercover with the New Orleans Police Department to assist in undercover sting operations. When Jasper, a cop who portrays fake hitmen to solicit murder-for-hire confessions and payments from the suspects, is suspended for his brutality, Gary is unwillingly ushered into the role.
Gary quickly finds himself to be a natural in garnering solicitations, researching suspects in advance and tailoring a unique hit man persona for each one. He becomes a confident and charismatic man named Ron for a discontented married woman named Madison, who is trying to have her abusive husband killed. Gary quickly finds himself both sympathetic and attracted to her, ultimately refusing the money and suggesting she use it to restart her life, much to the disappointment of Jasper and Gary's other coworkers, Claudette and Phil. Gary later begins a sexual relationship with Madison without revealing his true identity to her. To keep up the appearance of being a hitman, Gary shows her how to use a gun, advising her to aim for the heart.
One night after clubbing, Gary and Madison have a heated encounter with Ray, Madison's ex-husband, which ends with Gary pulling a gun to back him off. Later that night, the couple encounter Jasper, who is suspicious of their being together. A furious Ray attempts to have Madison killed, unknowingly contacting Gary. Upon recognizing Gary as Madison's boyfriend, Ray rushes out of the sting, proclaiming that he will kill her himself. Gary informs Madison and attempts to move her out of her house, but she dismisses his fears, stating that Ray wouldn't follow through.
Gary later learns that Ray was shot in the heart with bullets belonging to a gun like Madison's. Gary confronts Madison, and she admits to the murder, prompting Gary to reveal his true identity in a panic.After being kicked out by Madison, Gary returns to the police, who reveal their evidence on her is building after discovering Ray increased his life insurance policy before he died. Jasper, who knows of Gary and Madison's relationship and is jealous that Gary took his job, suggests Gary try to solicit a confession out of her using the character of Ron.
Gary arrives at Madison's house with a wire and pretends to interrogate her while giving her acting cues typed on his phone. Their charade convinces the police that she is innocent, but Jasper later comes to Madison's home, blackmailing her and Gary to pay him the money that Madison inherited from Ray's life insurance policy, lest he send them both to prison for Ray's murder. Madison drugs Jasper's drink, causing him to pass out, and Gary ties a plastic bag over his head, planning to stage his death as a suicide. The story jumps forward several years; Gary and Madison are now happily married with two children.
AGC Studios reported strong sales for international distribution at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.[8] Powell was joined by Austin Amelio, Retta, and Molly Bernard in October 2022.[9][10] Filming began in New Orleans in October 2022,[10][11] and production was completed that November.[12]
Hit Man had its world premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2023.[13] It was followed afterward by its North American premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 11.[14] It also screened at the 2023 BFI London Film Festival on October 6, 2023.[15]
Netflix acquired distribution rights to the film for $20 million at TIFF, making it the largest film deal of the festival and of 2023, with plans for a theatrical release as well.[16] It was released in select theaters in the United States on May 24, 2024,[17] before streaming on Netflix starting on June 7, 2024.[18]
Tommy Monaghan was born to Kathryn Monaghan, an Irish prostitute, in Gotham City. His mother had a habit of naming her children after the johns who impregnated her, all holier-than-thou citizens who used her services away from prying eyes, in order to shame them before the whole town, but Tommy's father, ruthless businessman Tom Dawson, was a violent man who threatened to kill Kathryn if she named her unborn son after him; Kathryn did so anyway, as her hatred for Dawson was stronger than her fear of him. As a warning, once Dawson heard of this from the obstetrician that gave Kathryn the news that she had another child on the way, he had her house burnt down, killing three of her children. Kathryn fled to the United States, and left Tommy with a Catholic orphanage in Gotham City. Dawson tracked her down and mutilated her. She later died from her injuries.[1]
Tommy grew up in St. Killian's Orphanage under the guidance of Sister Concepta and Sean Noonan, the latter of which treated him like a son. He befriended Sean's nephew Pat, and the two remained friends into adulthood. Tommy joined the United States Marine Corps, where he met Natt Walls. He and Natt became friends when Tommy took his side against two corrupt Marine recruits. They served together in Operation Desert Storm in Iraq and saw little action, though they did accidentally kill a group of British S.A.S. troops.[2]
Upon returning to the United States, Tommy became a hitman, and he worked for several mafia families and government agencies. Though he killed for a living, he maintained a firm rule of never killing a good person. This rule came into play several times in Tommy's life as he had encounters with police officers and superheroes. Tommy himself became a superhuman when he was performing a hit on the head of the Dubelz Crime Family. One of the Bloodlines Parasites, the hideous Glonth, killed his target, then attempted to kill Tommy by draining his spinal cord fluid. The attack left Tommy alive and able to read minds and see through solid objects. Tommy and the demon Etrigan worked together to temporarily defeat Glonth and kill Joe Dublez. The death of the Dubelz patriarch, however, earned him the hatred of that family.[3]
Etrigan hired Tommy to help him remove Asteroth from power in Gotham City. Asteroth had gotten a religious group called the Choirboy Commandoes to guard him. Etrigan, being a demon of Hell, was not equipped to face them. Tommy was able to decimate the Choirboy Commandoes, as well as Asteroth's thugs, long enough for Etrigan to send Asteroth back to Hell.[4]
During another of Jason Blood and Etrigan's ongoing conflicts, Tommy's services were again purchased, this time by Blood. Tommy was to watch the aged wizard Merlin and kill him if he moved against Blood. Tommy did his job, shooting the man. Blood, after dealing with Etrigan's plot, skipped town without paying Tommy the two million dollars he promised.[5]
When the wrath of the Dubelz family came to Tommy, in which Pat Noonan was killed for not revealing Tommy's location to an associate of Moe Dubelz, Tommy declared vengeance on the entire Dubelz family, and he managed to kill every one of them. The Arkannone, Hell's lords of the gun, were impressed by Tommy's ability to kill so effectively, and they sought to employ him as their earthly agent. He resisted, and the Arkannone sent the Mawzir after him. Tommy managed to kill the Mawzir and the Arkannone with the help of Etrigan. The incident had also led to his on and off relationship with a honest GCPD detective Deborah Tiegel.[6]
Tommy's activities also catches the attention of Mr. Truman, a CIA Agent who despised metahumans and attempted to enlist Tommy to a special group in controlling and eliminating the metahuman population under the interests of the United States; Truman ensured that if Tommy rejected his offer then he would be killed while appearing to be resisting a police arrest.[7] Tommy, however, undermined Truman by secretly recording his conspiracy while under a wiretap and bringing incriminating evidence against him with help from Deborah Tiegel and Green Lantern.[8]
Tommy had several encounters with superheroes and villains. His dealings with heroes often coming at odds over Tommy's career, such as Batman. But in some cases can be notably amicable. Amazingly, one of the heroes that actually appreciated Tommy was Superman, who became Tommy's confidant.[9] Regardless of Tommy's occupation, he proved himself as a hero when he helped the Justice League in eradicating a Bloodlines Parasite outbreak on their satellite headquarters.[10]
Tommy would again come into another conflict with Truman over the protection of Maggie Lorenzo, a homeless woman who witnessed an escaped subject of Truman's experiment to duplicate the effects of the Bloodlines incident. Allying with Natt Walls and Kathryn McAllister (a defecting associate of Truman), Tommy destroys Truman's experiment, ultimately leading to a final showdown in which he and Natt were killed but not before killing Truman in the process.[11] Tommy's passing did not go unheard of in the superhero community. Superman was devastated by the news and admitted that he admired Tommy's moral courage in extreme situations.[10]
This character was one of the many superpowered individuals introduced during the "Bloodlines" crossover event, where a number of Alien Parasites invaded the Earth and inadvertently activated the Metagene in a number of people.
