As the error says "/var/local/squirrelmail/data" should be writable by daemon user. Try to chown the directory e.g. chown -R daemon:daemon /var/local/squirrelmail/data.

your first problem looks like a handler issue. Make sure that your web server can handle PHP. You need to configure Squirrelmail to use your IMAP server (Dovecot?) :)

@John Ray, seems like my Dovecot + Squirrelmail legacy at DW is being carried onwards? :) hehehe

change your permission for /var/local/squirrelmail/data directory. Squirrelmail will be running as the apache user so depending on your linux distro it could be the user 'www-data' or 'apache' .

You can use the 'chmod' command. :)

Oops.. I meant 'chown' command. Although 'chmod' will allow you to set the directory to be accessible by other users (but not recommended).

what is the linux distribution that you used?

Make sure that apache is able to parse PHP :) eg..

<IfModule mod_php5.c>
    <FilesMatch "\.ph(p3?|tml)$">
SetHandler application/x-httpd-php
    </FilesMatch>
    <FilesMatch "\.phps$">
SetHandler application/x-httpd-php-source
    </FilesMatch>
    # To re-enable php in user directories comment the following lines
    # (from <IfModule ...> to </IfModule>.) Do NOT set it to On as it
    # prevents .htaccess files from disabling it.
    <IfModule mod_userdir.c>
        <Directory /home/*/public_html>
            php_admin_value engine Off
        </Directory>
    </IfModule>
</IfModule>

I leave it to you where to put that.
