“Virtual schools have to follow the same Standards of Quality, the same Standards of Learning as any other public school,” McDonnell said. “This doesn’t diminish quality; it creates additional quality and additional flexibility for young people to learn at their own pace,” McDonnell said. Among the students who could benefit from the legislation are autistic youngsters who can’t focus on work in a classroom, fast learners who get bored in school, and others who don’t do well for a variety of reasons. “This goes across the spectrum,” McDonnell said. Virginia already has one virtual school, which operates from Carroll County in Southwest Virginia.
