I have two contests for the Ottawa Valley Book Club members.
Random House sent me 10 advance copies of Roddy Doyle's "Paula
Spencer." This book is not yet released and the edition they sent me
is an uncorrected proof. The book is rare and only media personnel and
a few book clubs are receiving advance copies. The cover is not yet
designed so even the cover is unique in the fact that it has a
disclaimer on it stating that it is not a finalized version of the
book. The book is bound however and is a trade paperback size.
"Paula Spencer" begins on the eve of Paula's forty-eighth birthday.
She hasn't had a drink for four months and five days. Having outlived
an abusive husband and father, Paula and her four children are now
struggling to live their adult lives - two of the kids balancing their
own addictions. Knowing how close she always is to the edge, Paula
rebuilds her life slowly, taking pride in the things she accomplishes,
helped by the lists she makes to plan for the future. As she goes
about her daily routine working as a cleaning woman, and looking after
her two children at home, she re-establishes connections with her
extended family, expanding her world. She discovers the latest music,
the Internet and text-messaging, treats herself to Italian coffee,
gradually venturing beyond where she's always felt most comfortable.
As Paula thinks of herself, "She's the new-old woman, learning how to
live."
Doyle depicts a woman both strong and fragile, who is fighting back and
finally able to be a mother to her children - but now that they're
mostly grown up, is it too late? Fans and new readers alike will root
for Paula to stay clean and find a little healing for herself and her
children, amidst the threat that it may all go wrong.
So... how can you win a copy of this book? There are two ways at the
present moment (more to come!):
1) For new forum users: we're currently at 60 members on the book
club forum. To increase the amount of discussion on the forum, I am
giving away one copy of "Paula Spencer" to our 100th member to sign up
for an account and become an ACTIVE member. By active member, I mean
someone who comes onto the forum and participates in discussion.
Duplicate accounts created by current forum users will be deleted and
will not count toward the goal of 100 members. This is for new forum
users only!
2) Open to all members: Send in your answer to the following trivia
question via e-mail and a random draw will be done once all ballots are
received. When e-mailing in your answer, please include your full name
and mailing address if you wish the book to be mailed to you. The
question is: "What is the title of the book that the character Paula
Spencer first appeared in?" Contest closing date is the last day of
July - Monday, July 31, 2006 - two winners will be chosen.
So take part and enjoy the fun! I'll be giving away more copies of
this great book in the months to come!
