Greetings!
The Ottawa Valley Book Club is forever changing! Stay in the know with
our newsletter - a monthly blast of news!
Be sure to read through to the bottom because you never know what you
might miss and I have specific action items for all members (both
in-person and web-based members)!
Meeting Times & Dates
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our July 6 meeting will be held at Erin Blaskie's house at 875 Eighth
Street in Renfrew, Ontario from 7 pm - 9 pm. Finding a suitable
location in Renfrew has proven to be somewhat difficult so until I find
a solid place to host our meetings, I will host them here. I'll provide
tea and cookies again and I can also do coffee!
The July 8 meeting will be held at the Victoria Tea House in Pembroke,
Ontario from 11 - 1 pm (please note this time change). Snacks and
beverages are available to purchase and from what I've heard, this
location is amazing!
There will also be a July 9 meeting on the chat room for anyone who
can't make the other two meetings and of course for our online members.
It will start at 8:00 PM.
** If anyone has ideas for meeting locations in both Renfrew or
Pembroke, can you please forward those to me?
Check out the directions and more on the meeting info here:
Author Teleconferences
On June 29, 2006, Beth Powning will be joining us for a one-hour phone
conference (both online and in-person members can participate) to
discuss our selection for June, "The Hatbox Letters." The call will be
from 7-8 pm EST and I will be sending out the telephone number and pass
code closer to the date of the teleconference. Remember to check with
your local telephone carrier to be sure you have US minutes as the call
is a US number. For those of you in the US, it would be billed at your
regular rate to call within the US.
Register for this event here:
http://www.freewebs.com/ovbookclub/bethpowningteleconference.htm
Also, Chris Bohjalian, the author of "Before You Know Kindness" our
September selection has offered to do a teleconference with us as well.
Details and exact dates will follow as soon as I get it booked with
him.
Other Author Events
On July 18, 2006 some members of the book club will be going to the
Literacy Plus evening with Frances Itani in Eganville, Ontario. This
coincides with our book choice for July, "Deafening" by Frances Itani.
Make sure to bring your books! The event is at 7:30 PM and includes
dessert. Cost for the event is $15.00 and all proceeds go to support
Literacy Plus. You may purchase your tickets at the following
locations: The Renfrew Book Shop in Renfrew, Coles in Pembroke,
Serendipity and at the Literacy Plus office in Eganville.
Chat Nights
We're going to try something new - for all of our online members and
local members to connect, we are going to host chat nights. These chat
nights will take place on the website's message board and we'll start
out by trying every Tuesday night from 8-9 PM EST. It's not mandatory
but rather just an organized time to take advantage of the chat room.
The chats also won't be book specific but rather just to get to know
one another. I won't be able to make it this Tuesday as I will be in
North Carolina next week but feel free to log on and chat away!
The chat room's link is here:
Member Specific News (Includes action items!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. We need two volunteers for the poetry readings for the July meetings
(one for Thursday and one for Saturday). If you care to volunteer for
this, please let us know!
2. Get online and join the forum if you haven't already! If you don't
quite know your way around the web, e-mail us and we can set up a time
to teach you! We'll get you set up on the message board, teach you how
to post, etc. Just let us know! Visit the message board here:

Other News
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Petawawa Library has joined forces with us to bring our book club
to their patrons and to allow us to host future meetings in their
beautiful facilities. They host many author events and will be bringing
in the books from our book club list so that they are readily
available. A special thank you to the library for helping us out so
much! Check out their website at www.petawawapubliclibrary.ca.
The Renfrew & Arnprior Book Shops are extending the discount (15%) to
the rest of the book club selections. So, if you are nearby, pop in and
grab your books from them! Also, I put links to both Chapters and
Amazon on the message board and the website. If you are going to make
online purchases, please consider going through that link and save
yourself some money!
Sincerely,
Erin Blaskie
