I have to admit I have not used linux in over a decade, before there was any windows-type GUI interfaces.
However, the procedure would be exactly the same, start with a fresh install, do not overwrite your old /bin directory, then copy over the files you need and restart inside this new directory. This way if the install goes bad you can always revert by restarting in your old one.
If you are using the text console, the commands are similar to DOS. cp=copy, rm=remove(delete) and cd=cd(change directory)
If you need an editor three are usually at least three, joe, nano and vi
So enter joe OpenSim.ini to edit your setup file, and control-K,X is the save command I think.
Good luck.
