Have you noticed that Matthew and Luke begin their Gospels with minute details and a whimper? Things begin slowly and grow gradually. John's Gospel, on the other hand, is more like a current TV show (at least in words I like). It begins with a BIG BANG. Like Genesis 1, it starts "In the beginning..."

Jesus' identity is made clear from the start. He is the "Lamb of God", the "Messiah", the one about whom Moses and the prophets wrote, the "Son of God", and the "King of Israel". BANG! Any questions? This is not a mystery novel, not a slow unfolding of a hidden truth.

Nathanael is soon invited to go with them and meet the "son of Joseph from Nazareth."
Nathanael, skeptical, responds derisively, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" The answer is straightforward, "Come and see."

Let's start the year in a strong manner, with a big bang of our own. Come and see weekly at Old Mission.
