Hello Group!

We've decided to change our meeting day to the 2nd and 4th Sunday
nights of the month at 7:30pm. Hopefully this will breed some
consistency and free up people's schedules. So we will be meeting
this Sunday, October 11th at the Cocos in Newport Beach. I look
forward to seeing and meeting you all at future meetingsl Please RSVP
that you will be there this Sunday.

Below is a message from Tom Krogstad who founded this group. He goes
into more detail about our expectations for these meetings as we go
forward.

Thanks,

Ryan

Hello to Orange County Screenwriting friends

My name is Tom Krogstad. Some of you may know me, but to others I know
I am a new name. I was among the first four members attending the
Orange County Screenwriters Group nearly five years ago now. I have
not been active for about two years, after running the group for about
18 months prior to that. I have stayed on the email list since, just
to keep informed about what was going on. I was personally invited to
the Orange County Screenwriters gathering Sept. 30, which was called
in part to discuss the future of the group.

A small group of us, led by our leader Ryan Pak (who I was pleased to
meet in person) and including Shelly Paino, Matt Osso, John Lovett and
Jay Rhein gathered and decided to make some changes to see if we can
instill a little life into our struggling group. By the end of the
night, we decided to arbitrarily try some things, and remain open to
further changes still. Our hope is that with the changes we can
encourage some of you 70 or so folks on the email list, to come out
and share your talents and learn from your fellow writers so that we
may all grow successful careers.

First off what remains the same: We want to regularly meet and have
participants bring pages. We plan to read them together and analyze
what we have created. We’ll continue to need someone to be responsible
for leading the evening, and be the go-to during the week for
problems, questions, etc. Coco’s Fashion Island has been working well
as a meeting spot and as long as their management agrees and we
continue to buy as many dinners, desserts and drinks as we can, we
intend to meet there.

So, the changes:

1. We want to change the night, to Sundays. While we chose to continue
meeting 7:30 to no later than 10 for right now, we will listen to
suggestions for changes in the hour. We felt it might be easier for
folks to slip in a meeting at that time, after most weekend
responsibilities are done and not during the week, when it sometimes
gets easy to be encumbered by the rest of work or family or social
life.

2. We want to change to twice a month. Ryan would like it the second
and fourth Sunday evening, and he’s the boss.

3. Those who want their pages read need to commit to bringing 10 pages
per meeting. No more whole act readings, also hopefully nothing less
than ten pages. With six-10 of us doing this per meeting, we will
encourage each participant to complete a complete screenplay draft
over six months or so. We are going to encourage you to bring pages
chronologically. And we will not read aloud the redrafted same ten
pages until we have first read the entire script once.

4. We recognize and accept our ongoing responsibility to beginners.
Screenwriters of all or no abilities continue to be welcome. However,
we expect beginners to catch up to the basics of written screenplay
structure on their own - through reading books, taking other classes,
reading existing screenplays or indeed an easy way - helping to read
aloud screenplays at our meetings. Similarly, writers who have nothing
to have read by the group right now are welcome to come and
participate in the discussion.

5. No missing meetings for those in the process of having their
screenplays read. Too often in the past, a writer will show up with
their pages, and then not be seen again until they want some more
pages read. A group can’t survive with that sort of on-again, off-
again participation. Of course there is always an emergency, but if
you commit to having pages read, then you are committing to the best
of your ability, to attend every other week and have your 10 pages
read, until the group has gone completely through your screenplay.

I have not been involved in the group for some time. Right now I am
thinking of returning to occasional participation and hope to meet
those of you I never have met. I know at times the group has
flourished, other times it has been weak. The hope of those at our
meeting Sept. 30 was that with these sorts of changes this group can
once again regain its strength. Ryan is the main man to talk to, and I
think he will still be soliciting RSVPs for each meeting. Right Ryan?
But if you want, drop me a line at tomkr...@verizon.net

Well, I hope this stirs some of you to become active. I have submitted
this to Ryan for his input, asked him to add his own thoughts and send
it to the group. Ryan, if I read my calendar right, that means
meetings on the 11th and 25th of October. Is that right?

Respectfully,

Tom Krogstad

Well, a woman named Martha was the founder. I was there at the birth,
though!

Sounds great!  Sunday is perfect for me as my week is tied up with work and dance-related responsibilities.

Thanks to everyone who attended on Sept. 30th.

Special thanks to Tom Krogstad and John Lovett who took time to join us for the first time in a while in order to try to help re-organize the group and to help the group regain some of its past life.

See you all this Sunday.
