Creating the Universal User Login Interface

First post!! HA! Just kidding. :)

Developing a user login system for a site can be a daunting task. I've
been working on a rather basic login system that would allow for simple
implementation on a site or PHP project, but be perfectly expandable.
Before doing this, I would like to know if anyone else has either built
or know of an openly available code to use when building a site that
allows users to make changes to their profiles.

I haven't used it but have you looked at a PEAR package called LiveUser ( http://pear.php.net/package/LiveUser ) ? It has functionality for permissions. There is also an Admin side. I have used the Auth package which is very basic. Unsure if this helps.
