Judy.

An informed citizenry is freedom¹s best defense.
I know no safe depositor of the ultimate powers of society but the people
themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their
control with wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them
but to inform their discretion."   ~Thomas Jefferson 1820

Subject: Help AlterNet keep up the fight!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. I also wish that you have not been too overwhelmed by the many year-end appeals landing in your mailbox. We waited at least until now to provide you a tiny respite.

But you know what this e-mail is all about. We are nearing the end of a year, when we look back at what we have achieved and how you have helped us. And of course, we can't forget the challenges ahead.

These are often bittersweet moments because many of you have been kind to us. We have had a banner year, yet the many problems we face as a society and within our communities have not been solved. In too many cases, policies and events became more infuriating as the year went on.

In 2013, we have so much appreciated your financial support -- more than 3,500 donors in 2013 so far.  We love you being our Facebook fans (245% increase in 2013  to 270,000,) and Twitter followers (up 33% in 2013 to 72,000). And we are thrilled when you send articles to your friends and colleagues, spreading the word.

We really depend on your generosity and engagement. As the media system rapidly changes, increasingly independent media and social change is a team effort between you and us. As less people watch TV and read newspapers, the action is happening online.  It is how we beat the right wing and the increasingly conservative corporate media.  The loyalty, support and motivation of many thousands of you of helped make it a very successful year.

But we have to finish strong or we won't succeed.  Between now and the end of the year is the most important part, the final dash of a year long run.  We need to raise $60,000 between now and December 31st to make our budget.  Can you make an end of the year contribution to AlterNet now?

Just to give you a few highlights of our year:  Our audience exploded this Fall, almost doubling over the last 2 months to where 6.8 million individual people came to AlterNet in November, according to Google Analytics.

And as you know AlterNet is over-flowing smorgasbord of content to meet any and all your needs.

We:
  • are the only web site that has special newsletters and editors for economics, education, food, drug reform, media, international, environment, personal health, activism and more
  • published more than 6,900 articles this year thus far
  • published 65 articles about Monsanto and the GMO battle, one of the year's most important topics; and more than 100 articles about fracking -- a subject of huge concern among our readers
  • published 52 excerpts, articles, and interviews by Noam Chomsky and more than 2.6 million individual people read Noam, who is still AlterNet's favorite writer after all these years

And that is just a taste.

While there are a few glimmers of hope, many challenges remain. There are many disturbing trends that are not slowing down -- such as extreme inequality, low wage jobs, mass incarceration, job stress, global warming, fracking, GMO foods, school privitization, political and corporate corruption and on and on not. And the billionaire Koch Brothers have doubled down on disrupting our society -- they operate like a steam roller trying to crush everything in their way.

So now is not time to stop fighting. We have to up the ante. Which is why we need you -- right now -- so we can keep up the pressure. Can you support AlterNet with an end of the year gift? We appreciate your support.

Sincerely,

Don Hazen
