OAB has received funding for a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA to serve as
our Community Manager. AmeriCorps VISTA is a Federal national service
program - members work for a year on an anti-poverty project and
receive a stipend as well as an education award upon completion of
their service.
OAB's Community Manager will be responsible for outreach to users of
our free wireless network and for recruiting and supporting
volunteers. This is a great opportunity for someone who is starting
out or looking to change careers. This individual will have a lot of
responsibility and a wide range of opportunities to learn and to
network with the brightest minds in the technology and non-profit
sector in the Boston area.
Tasks include:
* Create relationships with local tenants' organizations and other
community groups to develop the capacity to understand local needs and
to communicate with prospective users most in need of service.
* Develop and implement systems for identifying prospective users,
creating systems of clear communication with them, and clarifying
their broadband-related needs.
* Develop OAB’s Neighborhood Splash Pages to enable OAB and community-
based organizations to communicate with network users and network
users to communicate with each other.
* Develop a database of the users and wireless devices on the network.
* Develop a technical support plan for OAB users. Deploy standard
support systems such as a knowledge base and a ticket-tracking database.
* Develop clear and concise documentation to enable users with modest
technical skills to solve common connectivity problems themselves.
* Develop a volunteer recruitment and management system that will
enable OAB to recruit volunteers to assist with deployment and support
services.
This position requires a mix of technical skills (knowing how to set
up and contribute to web-based technologies such as content management
systems for example) and community organizing skills.
