FYI, if you missed it, apparently RIPTA got a $100,000 planning "challenge" grant to further develop the streetcar concept. But there are a limited amount of transit capital funds for construction, and there is also hopes for commuter rail stations in Pawtucket, Cranston, East Greenwich, and extensions to south county and the Blackstone Valley, as well as expansion/improvements to the regular bus system. There may also be some ideas coming out of the Aquidneck study. How do we prioritize? (little hope of transferring highway funds in light of backlog of bridge and highway repair work) Also, among others, Pawtucket got a grant for intermodal planning downtown, Providence to look at bike-sharing.
I watched a lot of the TV snowstorm coverage. I heard plenty of updates on highway and airport conditions, but absolutely no mention of how RIPTA, the commuter rail, or Amtrak services fared on any of the three local TV news stations. Perhaps I missed it, had anyone heard local reports on that? If not, it seems as if those who use such services count for nothing and perhaps the local stations should hear about it from one of the advocacy groups.
Today, taking the bus, I noted many bus stops are blocked by piled up snow, even some with shelters such as the North Providence park-and-ride on Smith St. Of course, most of our NP sidewalks are impassable, sometimes blocked by huge snowpiles from private parking lots piled up on the public sidewalk, no doubt to remain long after much of the rest of the snow melts. The No. Prov Environmental Commission, interested in having a "walkable community" is taking photos of these situations. I hope anyone working on "complete streets" is considering snow removal issues.
best for all the holidays

heres a start::--.
Walking is a form of transportation, in fact it was the very first
mode and remains in some cultures the primary one. Aside from being a
mode of transport, walking is fundamental to better health because it
plays a role in preventing obesity, heart disease, diabetes and a host
of other chronic diseases. A snow storm such as the recent one
highlights how our current environment is overtly hostile to walking.
First in the lack of cleared sidewalks, which is illegal. and the fact
that as roads and parking lots are cleared they often pile the snow at
assorted bus stops. {Good public transit and walking are mutually
nourishing and interdependent.) Failure to clear sidewalks and other
walking surfaces is not only bad for getting around it is often
deadly. Last year last year 2 deaths occured in RI from failure to
clear sidewalksand walkways.....................
