From Sophia Blanton of Ashland, OR:
We're doing it again! Since 2009, I've welcomed dancers and musicians from around the world to my hometown of Berovo, Macedonia. Over the ten days of the Bogorodica and Ethno Square festivals, this curated journey offers you a truly authentic experience of Balkan music, dance and hospitality.
I'm so happy to host you!
The ten days feature six workshops in traditional dances such as Maleševka, Berovka, Kopačka, Bufčenska and more. We'll learn with the international Romany music & dance teacher Milo Destanovski and Metodi Skenderski of the "Ansambl Makedonija" national folkloric troupe.
We'll also dance and celebrate with live music provided by renowned local and regional musicians. Ethno Maleš features the zurla, tapan drums and gajda, while the Kanturovski family orchestra bring Balkan Brass to the celebration. Day trips in nature include musical picnics, easy hikes to local monasteries and stops along the way for great scenery and food. Evenings are celebrations of food, live music and dancing, and spontaneous jam sessions!
Private lessons in tapan, zurla, gajda, kaval and trumpet are available with our musicians.
