I have received information from several sources about these cuts and have been concerned about passing it on because there are other sources of cuts that are also concerning - public transit, arts, etc. I include Councilor Baca's email in case you want to weigh in on these cuts and/or others.
The City of Albuquerque City Council is finalizing Mayor Keller’s proposed FY27 budget, which is $35 million less than the previous year. The most significant impact will be felt by Albuquerque Open Space, which will experience the elimination of $1.3 million through four unfilled positions and numerous “contractual services” which include Park Attendants (from 5 to 2 employees), Bosque workers and other temps (9 employees), Educational staff (from 5 to 1 employee), janitorial services, and even water release to the Candelaria Nature Preserve, Los Poblanos, and Open Space Visitor Center fields and ponds. Collectively, Open Space will be required to operate with an estimated 20% reduction in funding, which will affect various aspects such as trail maintenance, reservations, gates, vaulted toilets, and more. These cuts represent over 75% of the requested $1.7 million in FY27 reductions within the Parks and Recreation Department.

City Council Members are convening as a “Committee of the Whole” tonight (Thursday) to finalize plans. The Council has already held two meetings in the past two weeks, but this will be without further public comment. A final vote on the budget may be held as early as next Monday’s regular meeting.
