Dear MBTA Stakeholders,

We hope this message finds you well.

The Public Engagement team invites you to attend our upcoming public meeting on the Focus 2050 project, scheduled for Wednesday, April 15th, 2026

Event Overview

Focus 2050 is the MBTA’s long-range plan for transit investments across the Commonwealth. It is the latest update to the Program for Mass Transportation, a plan required by state law.

The decisions we make today will shape how people travel throughout Massachusetts for decades to come. Focus 2050 will outline the agency’s vision, priorities, and investments for the future. The plan will:

• Help guide MBTA decision-making to ensure investments align with long-term goals
• Connect the MBTA’s strategic goals with its five-year Capital Investment Plan
• Identify key investment priorities and potential capital improvements
• Prepare the transit system for the Commonwealth’s future needs, including population growth, climate impacts, and changing travel patterns

Learn More and Share Your Feedback

Your voice matters in shaping the future of transit. We encourage you to join this meeting to learn more about Focus 2050, hear project updates, and share feedback on the priorities that will guide the MBTA moving forward.

Hi all,

I think it's important to participate in these Focus 2050 meetings, or at least to submit feedback or comments. It appears that the next two meetings are only "in person" and in Chelsea and Boston. There doesn't seem to be a virtual option to join the meetings. No other meetings are currently up on the website.

How is Newton (as a city) officially participating in this effort? Do we have representation and a "wish list" of projects that we would want studied and included in the Focus 2050 effort? At a minimum, we should be advocating for what's in our Comprehensive Plan.  Among those items:

1. High frequency (every 15-30 minutes) electric rail service between Riverside and South Station (with new platforms and access)
2. New intermodal commuter rail station at Riverside that allows connection between commuter rail and the Green line
3. Light rail extension from Newton Highlands to Needham (as also supported by Transit Matters and others) as a branch of the Green line
4. Extension of the Route 60 bus into Newton Centre, Newton Highlands, or perhaps Needham Street, with high frequency service
5. New rail station at Newton Corner with better transit connection between Newton Corner and Watertown Square

The Comprehensive Plan also called for extending the trackless trolley bus from Watertown Square to Newton Corner. However, the MBTA dismantled their only truly efficient electric bus service several years ago and took down the infrastructure.
