Hi all,
Councilor Lucas reported this in his newsletter today:
Washington Street Pilot Survey:
The Newtonville Area Council (NAC) conducted a residential survey of the Washington Street Pilot. 45% of respondents are opposed
to the pilot and would like to see Washington Street return to its original configuration, while 31% would like to see the pilot made permanent. The survey report also indicates that those respondents that live closest to the pilot are overwhelmingly opposed
to it by a 2:1 ratio. You can access the results here.
I recall that the data from Fall 2025 showed that since the pilot was initiated, there have been:
1. Fewer crashes
2. Minimal to no negative impact on traffic
3. No adverse impact to residential streets
4. Much improved bicycle and pedestrian safety and comfort
I am concerned that the survey results were at least partly based on factors other than factual information, since some survey respondents who want to return Washington Street to 4-lanes also stated that bicycle safety is now worse since the dedicated bicycle
lane was implemented. That doesn't make sense!
The results of the Fall 2025 assessment are buried in the Washington Street Pilot webpage and difficult to find. At a minimum, these results should be featured at the top of the page and more prominently.
Also, another assessment on the impact of the project in 2026 should be done to update the data.
