At any rate. I was hired and after the tasting where they liked my
food, they offered me a package of $45,000, benefits and so on, and my
next task was to create their menu. I immediately started working on
it, and during the next session of meeting with the owners they asked
me where I got my meat from at the last place where I was chef. And at
that moment I couldn't remember because my last chef job had been all
of 9 months earlier. So I told them that I forgot. Well within moments
the two owners left the room and after a few minute wait Ii decided it
was time to take off and finish up the work on my own. As I passed the
bar area I saw the two owners having a private conference and they
looked at me blankly - hiding their thoughts - and we said we would
meet up again tomorrow after I had finilized the menu.
Through the night I worked and came up with a unique but limited menu
of some truely original ideas which were going to be great. i made my
ingredient sheets and broke it down by category and resourced my
proprietors and had everything ready to go.
Next day I went to work and wanted to begin ordering. I called some of
the proprietors and scheduled meetings with their salespersons. I
walked around the restaurant and the GM, FOH Manager and Office Manager
all gave me blank looks. After about two hours, I got a call from the
owner. It seems that they all of a sudden didn't believe that I had
been a chef previously. They didn't have confidence that I could run
their restaurant.
All that just two days after the speech they gave me about having their
support 110%. The employees all knew that I was a sitting duck, and the
owners made me look like a moron in front of them. Then I had to cancel
my meetings with the purveyors - who I have to use again throughout my
entire career in this city - again making me look like a total fool.
So now I am out the cost of the food I bought for my chef's tasting as
if I bought those jokers dinner. And I have the hurt pride of having
been played very professionally by the owners of two restaurants in
Metairie. Moreover they made a big fucking mistake not hiring me
because I'm really the best and most creative chef in this entire city.
Nobody likes a loser. Well, I wasn't one until they made me feel like
one. That's what pisses me off. They could have just said from the
beginning that they weren't sure of my capabilities before leading me
on. They raised me up in order to cut me down. Ii didn't need that
blow to my ego in this already lackluster job market.
Oh well, fuck me!!!
