Hi Friends, 

This year, the United World College-USA’s Annual Conference in Montezuma, NM is hosting three exceptional artists and scholars who work professionally with various aspects of Balkan arts and culture and who will be presenting workshops in Balkan and Romani folklore, history, music, and dance.  (Presenter bios can be found here: presenter biosThey will be joined in performance on Saturday, February 3 at 7:00pm with Santa Fe Balkan band EVET. The Conference runs Feb 1-3. Community members and 10th-12th grade students are invited to participate in all or part of the conference. 

Balkan-Specific Events Include:

Friday, February 2:
10:30 - 12:00 Session A: Introduction to Balkan Arts, Folklore, Culture, and History with Kalin Kirilov and Carol Silverman (Music Classroom, Kluge Auditorium)
1:30 - 3:00 Session B: Balkan Dance Workshop with Alexander Markovic (Dance Studio, Fieldhouse)
3:15 - 4:45 Session C: Balkan Dance Workshop with Alexander Markovic (Dance Studio, Fieldhouse) - this workshop will include more complex dances at a faster pace
3:15 - 4:45 Session C: UWC-USA Silk Road Ensemble Rehearsal with Kalin Kirilov and Carol Silverman (Music Classroom - observers welcome)

Saturday, February 3:
10:30 - Noon Session D: Balkan Romani Music: Representation and Appropriation with Carol Silverman, Kalin Kirilov, Alexander Markovic (Music Classroom, Kluge Auditorium)
6:00 - 7:00: Community Dance Workshop with Alexander Markovic (Dance Studio, Fieldhouse)
7:00 - 9:00: Dance Party and Live Music Performance with Kalin Kirilov, Carol Silverman, and EVET. Dances led by Alexander Markovic. (Kluge Auditorium)

All workshops and events are free and open to the public. Please note, if you plan to attend any of the Dance Workshops, please bring clean, soft shoes for the Dance Studio. If you are interested in attending, please register here: Registration (No school affiliation necessary, please put n/a if attending as an individual) we Meals in the UWC-USA cafeteria are $8 each. We offer lodging for students in our field house, on the floor -- bring your own sleeping bag. There are also discounted rooms available at The Plaza and Best Western hotels in Las Vegas.

"Change the Conversation" will examine assumptions and 'stuck' perspectives or ideas and look at how to transform those to yield new perspectives, understanding and answers to contemporary challenges.
