GRETCHEN FELDMAN TO BE FEATURED IN SOLO EXHIBITION “STITCHES IN TIME,
ETC.”
Show runs May 8 through June 1, 2008; Opening Reception with the
Artist, Saturday, May 10 from 5:30 until 8:30 pm.
New paintings by artist Gretchen Feldman will be featured in a solo
exhibition entitled “stitches in time, etc.” at the Nevin Kelly
Gallery, 1517 U Street, NW, in Washington, DC.
Gretchen Feldman’s new paintings mark both a forward progression in
her development as an abstract watercolorist and a return to her past
as a textile conservator. Many of the paintings in “stitches in time,
etc” are influenced by common titles of traditional American quilts,
such as Chinese Checkers, Baby Blocks, and Queen’s Puzzle. Feldman’s
work gives these titles a distinctive modern voice. Other paintings in
the show (the “etc.” part of the exhibition title) have different
origins. Based on microscopic imagery, the paintings provide a bridge
between two different esthetic inspirations: the timeless and
functional art associated with 19th-century rural America and the
biotechnological explosion of the 21st-century. Despite enormous
differences in the appearance of art in the 19th and 21st centuries,
certain fundamentals remain important: structure, form, and
expression.
As an abstract artist, Feldman employs fundamental elements to portray
a sense of the intangible—energy, emotion and mood. Combining
transparent watercolor with thickly applied multi-layered opaque
colors, she creates depth in her work. In many of her paintings she
enhances the image with other mediums, such as iridescent pigment,
crayons, colored pencils and pastels. With the final product, Feldman
achieves her goal with a “balance of shape, form and powerful color.”
Feldman is a member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, the Martha’s
Vineyard Art Association, and the Martha’s Vineyard Center for the
Visual Arts.
“stitches in time, etc.” will be on view in the gallery from May 8
until June 1, 2008. The opening reception is on Saturday, May 10, from
5:30 until 8:30 pm. The artist will be in attendance.
