How to blur the background of a video in Natron ?

It's pretty easy,

just add a blur node to your image sequence

create a roto node to define the area you want to mask then just plug the roto node to the blur node as a mask.

That's it

Oh if you see the effect the other way around as you thought it just add an invert node after the roto .

Thank you, but now I need to put this effect in the video frame by frame, when I try to put the mask on blurred is showing an error message.

Don't worry you need just an easy fix:  

go to project properties (hit S) and set the frame rate according to the clip frame rate
