Eric LeCompte Presents “Virgil Michel's Benedictine Vision of a World Where All Have Enough”

As the world experiences the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and new Church reforms debated, we reflect on the life and work of Reverend Virgil Michel OSB.

A monk of St. John's Abbey in Minnesota, Michel wrote and organized during the Great Depression and was a Church reform leader. He asserted that liturgy is a model for us to live our daily lives - where being spiritually fed is inseparable from having enough food for our families and the right to good jobs. The work of Michel inspired Vatican II, multiple social movements, ecumenism and laid groundwork for Laudato si' and the Synod of the Amazon. One of the social movements, the Catholic Worker, became a close ally of Michel's Liturgical Movement. LeCompte will share stories of Michel's relationship with one of the Catholic Worker founders, Dorothy Day, who is on the path to sainthood. As we respond to the greatest economic crisis in our lifetimes, world leaders debate solutions that were born of the Michel era. Join us for this event as we discuss Michel's vision, response to financial crisis and Jubilee Economics.
