"My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.”   ― Desmond Tutu
CASA CRY                                                  DECEMBER  2024

On Tuesday, Oct. 22, two Marquette faculty members affiliated with the United Campus Workers of Wisconsin (UCW-WI) approached the Office of the Provost to negotiate a process to recognize a union to represent full-time, non-tenure track faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences. In advance of this communication, more than 65 percent of full-time, non-tenure track faculty in the college signed union authorization cards indicating their desire to stand together to collectively bargain their contracts with the university.   Instead of agreeing to negotiate with the union, on Friday, Oct. 25, university leadership chose to invoke the university’s legal right for a religious exemption from oversight by any governmental agency that might ask them to recognize their workers’ right to unionize. This stands in stark contrast with the position taken by other Jesuit universities, which have decided to protect their workers’ right to unionize, even if they are not compelled to by government agencies. For comparison, on Monday, Oct. 28, Saint Louis University (SLU) agreed to an election to recognize a unit of graduate student workers on campus. Indeed, neither SLU, Fordham, Loyola Chicago, Georgetown, nor Santa Clara feel their religious freedom is threatened by collectively bargaining with their workers; all of these Jesuit institutions have been driven by their mission to recognize faculty unions. Marquette University may still follow the examples of these other Catholic, Jesuit universities and stipulate a free and fair election administered by the National Labor Relations Board or another third party.

We remain standing together asking in one voice for Marquette to live out its Catholic, Jesuit mission by recognizing our right to organize and collectively bargain. As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops said in 1986: “All the moral principles that govern the just operation of any economic endeavor apply to the Church and its agencies and institutions; indeed the Church should be exemplary, and therefore all church institutions must also fully recognize the rights of employees to organize and bargain collectively with the institution through whatever association or organization they freely choose.” In solidarity, United Campus Workers of Wisconsin (UCW-WI)     !https://ucwwisconsin.org/ ----Lincoln Rice

“Love and ever more love is the only solution to every problem that comes up. If we love each other enough, we will bear with each other's faults and burdens. If we love enough, we are going to light a fire in the hearts of others.  And it is love that will burn out the sins and hatreds that sadden us. It is love that will make us want to do great things for each other. No sacrifice and no suffering will then seem too much.” -- Dorothy Day

DON’S JOKES

Now that I am getting older everything is starting to click. ….Knees, back, neck, etc I heard a doctor say, “.A patient cured is a customer lost”.  I’m on my second angel.  The first one  quit and is now in therapy. What do you call it when a snowman has a temper tantrum? A meltdown. Why are elevator jokes so good? Because they work on so many levels.  What do you call advice from a cow? Beef Tips. When is a door not a door? When it is ajar  Why did Santa put a clock on the sleigh? He wanted to see time fly.  Did you hear they arrested the devil? Yeah, they got him on possession. After the man who created the hokeypokey died, it took a while to get the body in the casket. They put his right foot in….. My dog used to chase people on bikes a lot. It got so bad that finally I had to take his bike away.   Once, my father came home and found me in front of a roaring fire. That made my father very mad, as we didn’t have a fireplace.  Behind every great man is a woman rolling her eyes. Adults are always asking children what they want to be when they grow up because they’re looking for ideas. When I was a kid my parents moved a lot, but I always found them. I want my children to have all the things I couldn’t afford. Then I want to move in with them.

“We call barbarians people living on the other side of the border.  We call civilized people living on this side of the border. We civilized, living on this side of the border, are not ashamed to arm ourselves to the teeth so as to protect ourselves against the barbarians living on the other side. And when the barbarians born on the other side of the border invade us we do not hesitate to kill them before we have tried to civilize them.  So we civilized exterminate barbarians without civilizing them  And we persist in calling ourselves civilized.”  ___ Peter Maurin in Easy Essays

NOTES FROM 21ST ST;

Today I was doing last minute outdoor yard preparations for the winter that is to come.  I trimmed back some plants, put away outdoor furniture and rolled up the garden hose.  I also raked and put down some soil and planted milkweed seeds.  It was my gesture of hope for the future. The hope that Monarch butterflies will find a refuge in my yard.  Many of us are dealing with a winter in our souls.  I believe every deed we do with love toward a better future will melt our souls into a spring of hope.  I will close with something I read recently: “You can accomplish by kindness what you cannot by force.” Publilius Syrus.  Peace, Roberta
