Tell Congress: Free Leqaa Kordia from ICE detention

Democracy Now reports:
The family of Leqaa Kordia, a 33-year-old Palestinian woman, are demanding answers after she was hospitalized from a reported seizure while being held in an ICE jail in north Texas. Kordia had participated in the Gaza solidarity protests at Columbia University and was arrested by ICE agents last year for staying in the U.S. on a lapsed student visa. Her family and lawyers have received limited information about her condition. Texas state Representative Salman Bhojani said, “She’s not been getting proper nutrition, it seems, and not getting proper sleep.” He also mentioned it took nearly 24 hours for Kordia’s legal team to confirm she was in the hospital. There have been multiple court orders allowing Kordia to be released on bond, but the Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly blocked her release.

ACT NOW: Tell your Members of Congress to take action immediately and call for the release of Leqaa Kordia from ICE detention. Click here for more information.

MLK Day arrest at Lockheed Martin

Activists from Pennsylvania’s Brandywine Peace Community gathered on a cold Martin Luther King Day at the entrance to the King of Prussia facility of Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest nuclear weapons contractor and war profiteer. After the group read from King’s acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize, Paul Sheldon entered Lockheed Martin property to talk with employees concerning their deadly work. He was stopped by Lockheed Martin security, and arrested for trespassing after handing them a copy of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Polish monk in Belarusian prison, charged with nuclear-related espionage

A 27-year-old Polish Carmelite monk has been held in a KGB pre-trial detention center in Belarus since September, facing a possible death sentence on suspicion of espionage after reportedly being found with a photocopy of a classified document related to the “Zapad-2025” war games involving the Russian nuclear weapons now stationed in Belarus. Grzegorz Gawel is recognized by Belarusian human rights organizations as a political prisoner. They are calling for consular access and his immediate release. Our House Centre for Human Rights and Relief, run by Belarusian exiles in Lithuania, says of Gawel that, “It is unclear whether he indeed tried to obtain and publish documents related to nuclear weapons, but if so, his actions can be seen as an important and heroic step in the fight for peace and security in the region.”
