Dear friends,

This news just in: Susan Crane, currently serving a 7 month sentence at Rohrbach prison for nuclear disarmament actions at Büchel air base in Germany, has been awarded the David Hartsough Lifetime Individual War Abolisher Award of 2024 by World BEYOND War!! Congratulations to Susan and to the other recipients! Read more below.

There haven’t been many updates from Rohrbach lately. We did learn that both Susans received the copies of the Nuclear Resister we sent (now online at http://www.nukeresister.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/NR-203204web.pdf). Also it seems that they cannot receive blank postcards after all, but if you write lightly in pencil on them, just a brief note, and put them in an envelope, they will get through and then, with the help of erasers, can be used. Understanding prison policies and rules is not a particularly clear or easy endeavor (plus it can depend on who is working in the mail room on a particular day)!

Peace,
Felice and Jack

World BEYOND War has given the 2024 David Hartsough Lifetime Individual War Abolisher Award to Susan Crane.

The presentation of the award to Susan Crane at an online public award ceremony on July 22, 2024, will be made by World BEYOND War Advisory Board Member Maria Santelli and World BEYOND War Technology Director Marc Eliot Stein. The presentation has been pre-recorded because Crane is currently incarcerated in Germany as a result of her participation in a nonviolent protest at a German military base where the U.S. military keeps nuclear weapons in violation of the Nonproliferation Treaty, human decency, and basic common sense. Crane is in jail for a 7-month sentence after having refused to pay a fine.

Susan Crane, who has lived in Catholic Worker communities, has done peace education and peace activism, including ploughshares actions and war tax resistance, for decades, and has repeatedly gone to jail for justice. She tells her story in a video that will be posted on the War Abolisher Awards website on July 22, a portion of which will be played during the July 22 online event.

The David Hartsough Lifetime Individual War Abolisher Award is named for World BEYOND War co-founder David Hartsough who interviewed Susan Crane earlier this year.

Those wishing to congratulate Susan can write to her at: Susan Crane, JVA Rohrbach, Peter-Caesar-Allee 1, 55597 Wöllstein, Germany.

The timing of the awards ceremony will be July 22, 2024, at 16:00 UTC, which is 6 a.m. in Honolulu, 9 a.m. in San Francisco, 10 a.m. in Mexico City, 12 noon in Washington D.C., 5 p.m. in Dublin, 5 p.m. in Yaoundé, 6 p.m. in Berlin, 7 p.m. in Rafah, 7 p.m. in Jerusalem, 7:30 p.m. in Tehran, and 9:30 p.m. in New Delhi.

The event is free and open to the media and the public. Register for the Zoom link here.

World BEYOND War is a global nonviolent movement, founded in 2014, to end war and establish a just and sustainable peace. The purpose of the awards is to honor and encourage support for those working to abolish the institution of war itself. With the Nobel Peace Prize and other nominally peace-focused institutions so frequently honoring other good causes or, in fact, wagers of war, World BEYOND War intends its awards to go to educators or activists intentionally and effectively advancing the cause of war abolition, accomplishing reductions in war-making, war preparations, or war culture. World BEYOND War received hundreds of impressive nominations. The World BEYOND War Board, with assistance from its Advisory Board and Staff, made the selections.

The awardees are honored for their body of work directly supporting one or more of the three segments of World BEYOND War’s strategy for reducing and eliminating war as outlined in the book A Global Security System, An Alternative to War. They are: Demilitarizing Security, Managing Conflict Without Violence, and Building a Culture of Peace.

World BEYOND War has given the 2024 Organizational War Abolisher Award to Combatants for Peace (CfP), a joint community of Palestinians and Israelis working in solidarity to end the occupation and all forms of oppression in Palestine and Israel. Guided by the values of nonviolent resistance, they are showing the world that there is another way.

World BEYOND War has given the 2024 Lifetime Organizational War Abolisher Award to No to War – No to NATO, an international network that has led the way in educating on alternatives to NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and in organizing protests, demonstrations, and creative actions opposing NATO militarism since 2009. No to War – No to NATO has been a big part of the planning of a counter-summit and rally held on July 6-7, 2024, in Washington, D.C.

World BEYOND War has given the 2024 Youth War Abolisher Award to Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union. In May, 2024, Trinity College agreed to fully divest from Israeli companies over the coming months.
