With a full heart in gratitude for a beautiful life, I pass on the news that Dagmar Hoxsie passed away on January 18, 2026. The Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, January 22 at 9:30 a.m.

Dagmar had a rich and full life. In addition to all the good work listed in her obituary, here are a few points that illustrate her dedication as a Catholic Worker.
She was beloved by so many and an active part of the Catholic Worker movement for more than 30 years. Dagmar was an integral part of the Yankton Catholic Worker. As part of this community life, she was a founding member of Emmaus House which provided hospitality for women and children visiting loved ones in prison. As a Catholic Worker, she also was central to the work of organizations in South Dakota advocating for peace and justice, indigenous rights, environmental safety and the end to the death penalty. Dagmar's life in community and prayer led her into vigils, protests, and nonviolent direct action including many trips to the South Dakota state capitol, the School of Americas in Georgia and the Strategic Air Command in Omaha, Nebraska.
Finally, dear to her heart was the time she spent in conversation and communion with the Beloved Community at many, many retreats and gatherings. In particular, attending the Midwest Catholic Worker gathering at Sugar Creek was the highlight of the year.
Of all the gifts that Dagmar brought to this world, enthusiasm was always in her heart. As she lives on in our hearts, go forth with joy and enthusiasm. As Wendell Berry said and Dagmar would concur: "Love the Lord. Love the world.... Be joyful though you have considered all the facts.... Practice resurrection."
