Staff Report ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali on Tuesday stressed upon the federal government to take concrete decisions to save the country from the scourge of terrorism. Speaking in SAMAA’s current affairs program, ‘Nadeem Malik Live’, Mr Jamali said that the debate on who is a martyr and who is not was a non-issue, which could cause negative implications for a common man and army, he noted. “Pakistan army has rendered innumerable sacrifices in the war against terrorism. But our leadership has not shown a clear way to the army,” he said. “Good or bad decision is better than no decision. It is about time the government takes some concrete decision.” There is a dearth of leadership in the country, he said. To a question, Jamali said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Syed Munawar Hasan are doing politics on the issue of martyrdom. MQM leader Waseem Akhtar said that all of us, including army, should be on same page to deal with the challenge of terrorism. “Taliban should be asked to announce a ceasefire for peace talks to resume he said, adding it has now become a war of our survival.” Senior ANP leader Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that it has already been decided in the APC that there would be military action if talks did not succeed. The US would not halt drone strikes, he said. Responding to a question about the timeframe of talks, he said the government cannot keep on waiting forever. “There is no other option but military action if Taliban refuse to hold talks. The federal government should have issued a statement instead of army regarding Munawar Hasan’s remarks,” he opined. Senior journalist Ansar Abbasi disclosed that there a significant progress was made for holding peace talks between the government and Taliban. “I was part of the whole dialogue process and also read the letter sent to Taliban by the government for engagement,” he said. "Although there was no direct contact between government and Taliban, some Ulema established contacts with TTP members, who responded positively,” he added. Legal expert and columnist Babar Sattar said it is state’s responsibility to protect its people. There must be some timeframe for peace talks to happen, he stressed. He pointed out that the government had no writ in tribal areas. “We should first regularize tribal areas and expel all foreign militants from our territory.” – SAMAA http://samaa.tv/Ex-PM-Jamali-asks-govt-to-take-concrete-steps-on-terrorism-73863-1.html |
