Hi all,

Does anyone have a strategic plan that you would be willing to share?  We are just starting the process at Grafton and need some guidance.

Thanks

Strategic plans are unique to an organizations which need to go through a process.

Most small or new organizations organizations cannot plan beyond 1 year and strategic plans are 3-5 years out. If you have never taken the time to state your goals for the next year, then plan one year and think where does this organization going to be in 3 years.

A strategic plan can be simple - planning to plan, developing a plan and then implementing it.

Last November Friends of FDR State Park developed a plan for this year; It is attached. We reviewed it periodically to keep on track.  What is crossed off was completed. As you can see we did not do everything. We will be reviewing the plan on Wednesday and deciding what to do next year.

Suggestions:
  • Simple statements help keep things on track.
  • Have two or three things you want to accomplish and everything it tied to those goals.
  • Outcomes are different than outputs; Having a tabling event is an output, getting 25 new members is output. An outcome of a tabling event is that more people know about you.
I had taught a strategic planning workshop for several years but had to give it up when I could no no longer drive at night because lack of night vision. Most of the people in the classes could not afford to hire a consultant. I taught them enough so that they could plan on their own.

Hope this helps

SXSHS has one, however they are quite unique based on the wants, the needs, the overall mission of each site or group.  Agreeing with Jane, about the process and regardless small obtainable goals help as well as not being frustrated by not meeting them each and every time.  Ensuring that the plan is realistic and with community focus is also vital. Keeping the plan on course is imperative as well, so building that into the plan is ideal – a set schedule of revisions or updates complementary of review of successes.

Dorothy, we hope that Grafton is well on its way through this process and can share its success story with all of us.  Thank you!

Hello everyone!

All NYS OPRHP Friends Groups have a membership to NYCON (http://www.nycon.org) which has been paid by Lucy R. Waletzky, M.D., Chair, State Council of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
NYCON can provide assistance and offers grants to non-profits. Our Friends group received a grant from them for strategic planning.  If you need sign-in information to NYCON, Sally Drake can help or just go to their website and send a request.
