Subject: January 30th ice report
1-30-25 Ice report.
I know you all have been on the edge of your seat waiting for this report.
Unfortunately, there is still not enough good ice on Lake Algonquin to hold a race. Last week we did a core sample in the area where the pits would go, and it was getting close. This week I walked further out onto the lake where the track would be and there just is not enough good ice yet.
There is also 8" to 12" of fresh snow on the lake and that will absolutely not help the situation.
We have to be extra careful with saying it is good to race, because if we say we are good to go we are committing to having possibly 100 cars, trucks, and trailers out on the ice. Plus who knows how many spectators and that's a lot of weight on the ice. With lots of snow on minimum ice thickness that complicates everything also because as we plow the pits and track it puts a tremendous amount of weight on all the edges of those areas. Which can crack the ice and let water up. It is much harder to do a race with a lot of snow on minimum ice.
The two phots are from today. We need 12 inches of black ice, but we have like 10" plus a couple of inches of white ice.
Here is some useless information for you from today and my ice checking trips. So far, I spent 16 hours checking ice and have driven 600 miles. It was 10F this morning up in Wells. When I chop out a piece of ice with the chain saw to look and measure, it sprays water everywhere, so my pants get wet and immediately freeze. Walking out through up to 12" of snow a quarter mile onto the lake is very tiring. If I kick the bucket out there, in ten minutes, I will just be another snow drift, and they won't find me until spring:-O
