Hi everyone,
As many of you NYDAWGers already know, I spent much of the last 10 years helping set up and manage digital archives for a variety of animation studios or distributors. Next week, I'm hosting a panel discussion and screening titled "The Amazing and Incredible History and Future of Brooklyn Animation" at Brooklyn Historical Society.
We are hoping this will be a first step in spreading the word that "Long before Walt Disney's name became synonymous with animated cartoons, American animation was born and bred in Brooklyn!"
This one night only event will feature clips from Sheepshead Bay's Winsor McCay's "Gertie the Trained Dinosaur" (1914);
a restored HD film and clips from Bronwsville's The Fleischer Brothers's Koko, Betty Boop and Popeye (1918-1930s), plus
"PEG + CAT" and a new series produced by Chickens (formerly 9 Ate 7 Productions) currently active in downtown Brooklyn.
The panelists include some well-known filmmakers who will dig into their film / video archives including
Oscar and Emmy-Award winner John Canemaker (who will provide a powerpoint plus his narration for the Winsor McCay film)
Cartoon collector Tommy Jose Stathes who will project films produced and rotoscopes by Fleischer Studios and
Emmy Award winner Jennifer Oxley who will talk about creating educational TV shows for kids!
The event will be held on
Tuesday July 25 at 6:30 PM
at Brooklyn Historical Society (128 Pierrepont Street 11201)
I've also attached a poster that was commissioned for this event. . . (I hope it goes through!)
If you are able to make it, please come by and give a nydawg hello!
