Greetings,

As web archiving practices take shape there is a pressing need for dialogue about the ethical risks and opportunities both for content creators and people bringing web-based materials into collections. The dramatic rise in the public’s use of the web and social media to share events and experiences presents new quandaries and brings up existing issues that also can apply to materials made available online.

I am writing to you to let you know about an upcoming forum to explore these issues. This event will be March 22-24, 2018 at the New Museum in New York City. More details are on this page: http://rhizome.org/editorial/2017/oct/24/open-call-national-forum-on-ethics-and-archiving-the-web/

We are now accepting proposals for presentations, discussions, case studies and workshops (deadline November 14). In addition to presentations and panel discussions there will be time for open collaboration on tools, practices and strategies for web archiving.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Community-driven web archiving efforts, and documentation of activism

- Archiving trauma, violence, and human rights issues

- Recognizing and dismantling digital colonialism and white supremacy in web archives

- Strategies for protecting users (from one another, from surveillance, or from commercial interests)

- Design-driven approaches to building more ethical web archives

-Issues arising when archives become big data or are used for machine learning

Presenters will receive an honorarium. There is travel funding available for presenters as well as attendees who are not presenting but need financial assistance to attend. Tickets will go on sale in December (after all applicants know the status of their proposals).

We’ve opted to keep the proposal process very streamlined. We are requesting you submit approximately 100 words about why you would like to participate in this event. To submit your proposal please use this form [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdbKaDFzAFtEY5fxMiPCMfwppSQjttbtCUL2NFAO1KMp_wgjw/viewform].

If you have any questions or concerns about this event, please email me at anna.p...@rhizome.org.

All best,

Anna
