TnT Forum Topic: “Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS–B)”. Leon Bruner, NT8B will provide an overview of his experience in setting up and running a ground-based receiving station for tracking aircraft transmitting Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS–B) data. ADS-B is a surveillance technology that allows an aircraft to determine its position via satellite and periodically broadcast the information so that it can be tracked by other aircraft and by any ground station in line of sight of the transmitter. ADS-B tracking information not secure which means received signals are easily decoded with simple inexpensive equipment. Once decoded the location information can be displayed in real time on a standard computer monitor or shared in crowd-sourced distributed networks such as FlightAware, Flightradar24 and OpenSky Network. The presentation will provide a brief overview of the ADS-B system, a tutorial on how to set up a ground receiving station using a simple homebrew antenna, SDR dongle, computer (PC or Raspberry Pi) and open-source software and examples of the interesting outputs obtained while monitoring ADS-B.

Main Meeting Presentation Topic: “CW for Field Day and Contesting” Now that Winterfest! 2018 is behind us, it’s a good time to start thinking about Field Day 2018, especially if your CW skills are rusty, you would like to push past a speed plateau, or you would like to learn CW. Doug Reece, AK4AO will address these questions at our next meeting:

– Why bother with CW?

– How can I learn CW or improve my skills?

– How can I start participating in CW contests while my skills are still below my target?
