Hey Compañer@s,

Just a quick reminder that our next meeting and Anti-Oppression training is happening this Saturday November 17, 10am - 5pm, (please note the end time as it is an hour later than usual) @ City Studio 1800 Spyglass Place.

As per usual we'll have a potluck lunch.  Please bring something to share and if possible think about gluten free and veggie options.

I'm super excited about this topic.  As a personal plug I was just at similar training last weekend with another group.  It was really transformative.  Our group felt more connected after the training and it improved our ability to communicate and work together as a team.

I've attached two pre-readings that Jackie and Natasha, our facilitators, would like everyone to read before Saturday.  They are quite short and shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to go through.  If you have questions about the definitions there will be time to ask them on Saturday.  Jackie and Natasha wanted me to remind you that paper copies will not be distributed on Saturday so it is strongly encouraged that you take a couple mins to review on own before we meet as group.

A bit more about Jackie and Natasha:

Natasha Aruliah, B.A., M.Ed. is a Counselling Psychologist, facilitator, educator and consultant, specialising in diversity, equity, social justice and intercultural competence, both in Canada and internationally.  As a counsellor she specialised in Couples and Family and Intercultural counselling which led to working with immigrant and refugee families in community based facilities.  Working predominantly with people of colour and others who experienced discrimination, led her into wider issues of Anti-Oppression, Equity, Diversity and Social Justice.

Since 1995 she has been an independent consultant working largely in the areas of education, healthcare, public sector and community services.  In 1999, she joined the faculty at UBC’s Centre for Intercultural Communication, facilitating courses in the Certificate for Intercultural Studies.   In addition, she is a faculty member at the Justice Institute of B.C. delivering courses on diversity, social justice and intercultural studies in a variety of programs and certificates.  She was a consultant with the Hastings Institute, is a founding faculty for the Inner Activist, a program designed specifically for activists. She continues her counselling work with an Aboriginal Healing Centre and with youth programs for marginalised and ‘at risk’ youth.

Jackie Larkin has been a social justice activist for over 4 decades -- in the women's, labour and environmental movements. She worked for some time as education coordinator with the BC Nurses' union. More recently working as a contractor facilitating leadership development and strategic planning with community groups, within healthcare and with unions.  She co-facilitates The Work That Reconnects inspired by the work of Joanna Macy. And is a member of the Inner Activist faculty.

looking forward to seeing you on Saturday,
Tasha

p.s.  There was talk about social hang out times after the Saturday training.  Andrea's house is open for East Side Cultural Crawl and a house concert on Saturday night.  There are lots of other options too.  Keep your evening open if you can and let's see check-in over lunch to see what people are feeling.

p.p.s. I wanted to share one of my personal fave anti-oppression resources, pretty much guaranteed to make you smile http://antioppressivebabyanimals.com/image/19117190505
