welcome for the new cohort! ball is rolling...

Hey again :)

(ok, seriously, I miss you guys... so I'm going to just email you over and over again)

I was thinking about applications going in for NU and really want to pull together a welcome for the new group. The best thing would be to hang out in person and have a cinnamon role. But I'm worried about Stef's abilities to join in :)

So, I was thinking that each of us could record a 30 second video (on your technology things) and email it to me. I will stick them all together and put some cheezy music in there. (full disclaimer...the only experience I have in using iMovie is making a wedding movie after I got married...um it was pretty good) :) :)

Ideas for what to say:

-welcome wishes

-thoughts on what the next year will be like in the program

-what to look forward to

-advice on life

-something that challenged/inspired you about this past year

(also, if there are other ideas brewing, please feel free to sharesies!)

If you are all into it, let's get those videos to me by Sept.22nd (ok, I'm just picking this date randomly, but it would be awesome if you just do it now... it will take 5 minutes :)

Thanks for starting this, Edith! I I remember us all talking about how we were going to welcome the next cohort and I think there was consensus that we wanted our video to be better than last year's, ha (not to sound ungrateful, NUBC5 is awesome). Scott, I think you had some ideas? 

I remember the video they made for us feeling a bit too "all of these people are going to be your best friends and this year is going to be the best" and to be honest, that kinda rung in my ears and stung a bit when things were feeling off mid-way through the year and then when we were having our tricky process conversations. 

So that's all to say that I'm glad we'd be filming these clips individually as they'll be less uniform and more personal AND I want to propose that, once the new cohort has been welcomed, we all decide on a date - I'll coordinate, obvs - where we get together and welcome them. That way, I think we can have more intimate conversations and talk about our experiences and what we learned in a more supportive way. 

What do you think?

Yes Shea! I think that a great gift to the new cohort would be kickstarting their post-Monday session social sessions by foisting their first one on them ourselves. For me, it felt like it took us awhile to break that seal, and it took a fair amount of bravery on our social conveners' part to get that going.  So, something like their 2nd or 3rd Monday maybe?

Ya I think that's a good idea Heather...giving them a little time before I peer-pressure them into hanging out with us hahaha. But actually, I remember the 'who wants to go for beers?' hanging in the air the first few times, so having allies from past cohorts in making that happen would have been awesome and I hope they'll be into it.

Ooh I'd love to come to that! Maybe we should start with that - then we could meet people and welcome them and then we can gauge whether or not they want to have an NUBC6-NUBC7 social thing. 

And sounds like we'd have to have our welcome in time for orientation on the 6th.
