Hi Next Up 6 crew,

Next Sunday, Feb 3rd we're hosting a discussion group on the Sylvan Lake Declaration. If you have time and are interested, we'd love if you could join us.

When: Feb 3, 2:00-3:00
Where: #502-1128 Quebec St ** BUZZ #7336 on the panel.
What: Discussion on the Sylvan Lake Declaration
Who: Awesome people - potentially you?

I'm hosting at my place, one block north of Main Street Skytrain. We have bike parking and are easily accessible by transit. Remember to buzz #7336. If you're having trouble getting in, call me at 604 209 7336

The SLD has its roots in past gatherings, and with this year's gathering fast approaching (along with the election),  it would be great to see if we can vision where we could take the declaration in the coming year.

Please RSVP so I can gauge numbers for snacks.

Best,
Sean Peters

Hey buddy!  Sorry I didn't get to you yesterday.  I was fighting something off all day, and spent most of it between ginger tea and bed.

Hope the convos were productive!

Hi all,

Great discussion on the SLD. Edith did a fantastic job of compiling some notes, which I've included below in short and long form.

Apologies I couldn't make it tonight. Was it discussed? Excited to see this move forward. Could be a potential point of collaboration amongst all of the current NU6 cohorts.

Best,
Sean

Sylvan Lake Declaration Project

Short-form

Short term goals:

-connect with other NU cohorts about short and long term goals of this project (Feb)

-launch website and document (Feb-Mar)

-develop call to action/ways to participate/”the Ask” section on website. (Feb-May)

Long term goals/vision:

-build map of progressive issues (start asap)

-figure out way for organizations and individuals to contribute/populate the website and/or map

-translate the document

-creative projects to engage with folks and explain/express/promote the document

-find ways to engage/include/welcome people who are more centrist

-sense of identification with a united progressive movement

-creat a U-turn! (change direction that our world and its leaders are taking)

Long-form

Short term goals:

-connect with other NU cohorts about short and long term goals of this project (Feb)

  1. talk with Andrea/other 4 facilitators about where cohorts are at with the declaration...i.e. have any projects started up? Anybody doing anything with it?
  2. email out invitation to participate/give feedback on short term & long term goals (have each group pick 1-2 to report to project group??)
  3. video/teleconference to brainstorm and synthesize feedback on direction of project and delegate tasks

-launch website and document (Feb-Mar)

  1. Venai has started a website using wordpress, need to buy domain name. Not live yet.
  2. need launch strategy
  3. clarify purpose of document and welcome (in website intro?)
  4. clarify call to action (section of website?)

-develop call to action/ways to participate/”the Ask” section on website (Feb-May)

  1. I think this is related to building the map of progressive issues
  2. brainstorm different ways to engage and participate with the document (sign/endorse document, call your MP/MLA, volunteer a few hours etc.)
  3. have ideas for how people can use this document as a tool for the provincial election in BC and future munic/provincial/federal elections (e.g. Call to action could be ‘read this document and email/call/meet with candidates and tell them you care about this issue and ask them what they are going to do about it’)

**maybe the ways to participate should be developed before the website launch?? Or maybe have a few ideas going and then we can build on it?

Long term goals/vision:

-build map of progressive issues (I see this as pretty important to doing as soon as possible, but not sure if it’s possible as a short term goal...it could be a big project)

  1. e.g. 5 points on where the issue is at right now, 3 action steps on what needs to happen next, examples of organizations/individuals doing the work. This will help educate folks who don’t know about the particular issue and it also helps people identify where they fit into the progressive movement

-figure out way for organizations and individuals to populate the map (maybe could start out with issue ‘heading’ and leave the description/action points to be filled in)

-translate the document (at least into French? any peeps with french skills in the Ottawa cohort??)

-creative projects to engage with folks and explain/express/promote the document (e.g. videos, t-shirts, buttons, murals, songs)

-don’t want to just preach to the choir, find ways to engage/include/welcome people who are more centrist and may not want to go to a rally, but could get excited about cleaning up a local park (speaks to making this project as accessible and welcoming as possible)

-sense of identification with a progressive movement

-creat a U-turn! (change direction that our world and its leaders are taking)

Brainstorm with Venai, Sean, and Edith- Feb.3, 2013

-a call to action page or small addition to introduction (or even introduction on the website to clarify purpose of the document and invitation to action) may be desirable but basically, not going to open the document to any further edits.

-project would greatly benefit input from cohorts/reps in other provinces to remain relevant nationally and not just Vancouver based

-Fraser institute (?) puts out yearly report on what they are doing well and what they are lacking/need to improve (e.g. doing well on financial policy but need more connection with first nation communities). This concept could be used to build a progressive map, help educate on where things are at right now and where we can go from here

-how to engage with faith-based communities (Chris as a resource)

-how to include older adults/intergenerational work (Kevin as a resource)

-how can this project engage youth? (highlight employment issues?)

-who has the bandwidth to take on this project/need project manager (Sean and Edith interested in pursuing project, would welcome others if interested)
