Hi everyone!

First off, just wanted to remind folks that our meeting tomorrow is at City Studio.

Secondly, I was trying real hard to find a video about canadian unions that would give some more background information, but I couldn't find anything worth sharing. 

I did find this pdf about unions, that gives some general information about what a union is, how to start one, some successes of unions in the past.  If this interests you, and you have time before tomorrow evening, please have a look! It is put out by the Toronto Labour council, so not totally pertinent to BC, but some info is general and useful.

For Rachel - 

My main questions are...

1. How do union leaders ensure transparency and accountability with members? How do reps report back on finances to members/where their dues are going? 
2. For Karen Cooling - seems like the CEP is really progressive. How do its members feel about this? Is there a disparity b/w the strategic direction of the CEP and how its members feel? 
3. Re anti-oppression within unions – I've heard that visible minorities are typically not very involved in union activities. Attempts to increase involvement/representation of these groups within the union (and youth too)? Note that all the kids in that Tyee article are white. 
4. Not-very-formed question about bureaucracy and size and unions becoming like "management" themselves...will think on this more.

My qs are about the political influence of unions - in what ways do they wield power and is that still the case? I've been a member of many unions and never was encouraged to vote along union lines - are votes what unions can deliver to politicians or $? 

I also wonder about how union membership affects workers day to day. What tools do they have to protect their rights to breaks, etc? I'm thinking of the move to the employment standards  toolkit - how safe is it for employees to demand their rights?
